Reader Amy submitted the following to Ask Unclutterer: I’d love to see some advice on what to donate vs. what to sell when clearing out the clutter! Amy, this is a great request. Here is the following method I suggest for deciding what to do with home and office items once you determine they no longer belong in your possession: Step 1: Log onto eBay and find out how much money a similar item recently ...

One of my favorite shows on NPR is Science Friday. On December 26, the host of Science Friday Ira Flatow interviewed clinical psychologist John Norcross about how to increase the odds of keeping new year’s resolutions. Norcross has researched and published two studies on resolutions and how people succeed at keeping them. A few fascinating points from the interview: 40-46% of people who set resolutions are successful at the six month point Having a resolution ...

This week’s Workspace of the Week is Seahill’s two-person office: It isn’t easy to share an office with someone (I know, I do it), and it is even more difficult to keep a shared space clean and tidy. What I like about this office is that it is apparent two people use the desks on a regular basis and keep it orderly. If you study the images, you’ll see a number of great ideas for ...

Earlier this week, in the hubbub of the holiday, I forgot to let all of you know that I would be appearing on BBC Radio. Do not fret, however! The show I was interviewed for, Pods and Blogs with Jamillah Knowles, on the Five Live station, still can be found online. My segment is only a few minutes long and occurs just before the middle of the program. The whole show is terrific, so, if ...

As the second post in my fall cleaning series, I would like to present a list of room-by-room cleaning. Again, please approach this list as a guide, not a rule book. If you don't get to everything on the list, it's okay. Even checking one item off the list is better than checking no items off the list. And, don't forget about my spring room-by-room cleaning guide that ran on April 1. Kitchen: 1. Scrub ...

Wondering what to do with all of your old CDs? Wonder no longer! Gizmodo suggests turning them into free weights. The idea is certainly resourceful, and originally comes from the Make: website. In the past, I’ve seen old CDs repurposed as coasters, artwork, and Christmas tree decorations. What clutter-busting solutions have you found for your old CDs? Image from Make:, and thanks to reader Katherine for bringing this to our attention.
