In July 1993, Graeme Obree broke the world hour record, one of the toughest things you can attempt in the world of cycling. Only the top names even dream of doing it.It was previously held for nine years by Francesco Moser, with a distance of 51.596 kilometres (32.06 miles). Obree's record lasted less than a week, being broken by Englishman Chris Boardman. Obree retook the record in April 1994 [Wikipedia].In the colorful documentary below, we ...

From Sharper Iron. Here one finds no shallow clichés: Fourteen Reasons for Fourteen Years? Fourteen years ago, my brother was hit by a truck. This past week, after living in a persistent vegetative state for all this time, he went home to be with the Lord. I shared the following at his memorial service on August 14, 2008. (Follow this link to view a YouTube tribute that was played at the memorial service.) After Jeremy’s ...

John Piper speaking on discernment, the Lakeland ‘outpouring’ in specific, and testing ‘revival’ in general:” “Discernment is not created in God’s people by brokenness, humility, reverence, and repentance. It is created by biblical truth and the application of truth by the power of the Holy Spirit to our hearts and minds. When that happens, then the brokenness, humility, reverence, and repentance will have the strong fiber of the full counsel of God in them. They ...

It’s funny. Most of my posts are about my battles with “The Traditionals,” those folks who are so set in their ways that they refuse to understand New Media. I know that they go home at night, hoping that this “New Media Fad” will be over so that they can go back to writing their same old Press Releases, going to their same old trade shows, and launching their same old marketing campaigns. But the ...

Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one. A.J. Liebling It seems that I’ve drawn the pointy-end of the quill through a blog comment of mine. Here’s the story. On July 25th, Lou Covey wrote a post about the cause and effect of a shrinking B2B news industry. In it, he highlighted seven points, of which I agreed with the first five, but had issues with the last two. Here’s his item ...

I have been rereading William Carlos Williams'Spring & All in the 1970 Frontier Press edition. That edition reprints the original 1923 Contact Press edition published in a run of 300 copies and allowed to go out of print more or less immediately. The work has been available also since 1971 in the New Directions collection, Imaginations, a volume that crams together Williams' five most important prose works into what, to my eye, is a more ...

Paul Gillin and David Strom have a podcast called MediaBlather. One of their recent guests was Social Media maven Chris Brogan, who I still owe a beer to, BTW, but that’s another story. The conversation turned to Twitter, a microblogging service that I’ve used, yet never really grasped fully– until Chris offered his always down-to-earth insight. Instead of answering the Twitter-recommended question: “What are you doing?” he suggested answering a different one: “What are you ...

Eyes on the Road - WSJ.com: "Forget Democrats vs. Republicans. When it comes to the future of cars, it's Technologists vs. Skeptics. Technologists believe that innovations in battery technology, hydrogen storage, cellulosic ethanol production, water-to-hydrogen systems, and lightweight vehicle design are right around the corner – thanks in part to the digital revolution of the late 20th Century."Bob Stempel was the former GM engineer who rose to the top of the company and presided over ...

Fuel Subsidies Overseas Take a Toll on U.S. - NYTimes.com: "The oil company BP, known for thorough statistical analysis of energy markets, estimates that countries with subsidies accounted for 96 percent of the world’s increase in oil use last year — growth that has helped drive prices to record levels. In most countries that do not subsidize fuel, high prices have caused oil demand to stagnate or fall, as economic theory says they should. But ...

The two-building complex now houses an Avis rental-car business.

Baker III Institute for Public Policy. The percentage they spend to find new deposits of fossil fuels has remained flat ...

I feel compelled to take a haitus from doing this blogging thing. Though I have quite a few thoughts and posts both in draft and in mind, I am not sure if I will release them into the wild. I need to take some time to think and pray about the direction I have been taking. Perhaps I will be back soon, but I do not know.

Photos by Ron Brinkmann I gave a ‘tip’ on an episode of TWiP a while back that stressed how simply taking a step or two forwards/backwards/right/left can radically change the composition of a photo. So on my recent trip I took a quick photo example of exactly this. The two images shown here were shot from locations that were about five feet apart. The one on the top was my first view of the subject ...

Kay Ryan has been named Poet Laureate of the United States (PLOTUS in Donald Hall’s useful acronym). And while she is being pitched as an outsider in this position, she also represents the 47th consecutive School of Quietude poet to hold the position in its 71 year history.¹ The sole attempt at an exception ever was the 1952 invitation to William Carlos Williams, who declined due to illness & never served. Williams still gets listed, ...

I think few people would disagree that children learn much of their life skills from their parents. From parenting, to work ethic, to spousal relationships, to personal finance, the most important things in life that children learn are those taught by the example of their parents. That isn’t just a broad opening statement, it’s truth born out of years of investigation by researchers…and from parents and grandparents who witness it every day. I’ve been thinking ...
