I have to admit, I didn’t really keep up on my feeds last week while I was out of town (and I’m still playing catch up). So I almost missed the poignant, slightly melodramatic saga of Bob, the misunderstood social media explorer. If you missed it, too, go ahead and catch up. I’ll wait for you. Done? Okay. Good. Short version? Bob was engaging his employer’s customers in social media. Bob was told explicitly by ...

Greetings, Social Media Explorers, from sunny Las Vegas on the last day of Pubcon 2008. For those not familiar with it, Pubcon is an internet marketing conference created by Webmaster World and sponsored this year by Microsoft. It’s one of the oldest and most well-attended conferences for those in search marketing (SEM), which includes both SEO and paid search. Over the years, Pubcon has expanded their content to include sessions on other topics of interest ...

It’s a scary world out there for any traditional advertising creatives who are still waiting for this whole “internet” craze to just go away. If you have been waiting for this whole “web 2.0/social media bubble” you keep hearing about to pop, and the world to return to the days when people left content creation and design to the professionals, you may have to consider the possibility that it’s gonna be a loooonnng wait. Marketing ...

“Pay no attention to that (wo)man behind the curtain.” - The Wizard, The Wizard of Oz Sometimes it’s nice to not participate in the conversation. Sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and listen. I did a little eavesdropping on a really fascinating conversation yesterday among some of the top social media specialists about the hot topic of personal branding. Geoff Livingston of Buzz Bin, Amber Naslund, Frank Martin, Mitch Joel and several other folks ...

Jason got an excellent response (and rightly so) to last week’s post on the ROI of Social Media. Both the post itself, and the comments, provided a lot of insight into appropriate valuation of social media services. In particular, I was captured by Dan Thornton’s comment, which mentioned three different perspectives: the social perspective, the old school perspective, and the transitional perspective. I love reading the perspective of the thought leaders who are trying to ...

Okay, confession time: I’m secretly a David Allen/GTD groupie. I discovered Allen’s stuff several years ago, when I was the in-house marketing person at a large regional commercial construction company. As basically a one-person marketing department, I had to juggle a lot of different priorities and tasks, and my workday was really unpredictable. One day I might be editing video for the annual Christmas party, the next I might be writing radio copy or designing ...

Yesterday, CNET reported that Adam Serner of Gartner will be presenting on social media marketing next week with the prediction that while over 75% of Fortune 1000 companies with Web sites will attempt an online social-networking campaign, 50 percent will fail. Personally, I think he’s being a little conservative in that estimate. If as many as 50 percent of the Fortune 1000 social media marketing campaigns begun next year succeed, I’d be surprised. I agree ...

A couple of months ago, amidst service outages galore, the Web 2.0 fishbowl was all a-Twitter about leaving Twitter for the latest microblogging/lifestreaming flavor of the month. Prominent lifestreamers were declaring Twitter dead and telling their many followers to follow them on over to their new preferred service, whether it was FriendFeed, Plurk, Identi.ca or something else. And yet, here we are a couple of months later, and Twitter is still the predominant site of ...

Life is not like a box of chocolates, regardless of what Forrest Gump may tell you. Life is like a bonsai tree. Are there any other closet Karate Kid fans in the house? Pipe up–there’s no shame here. It’s easy to let social media participation grow like kudzu until it completely takes over your life. Like any thing (even good things) you have to know your limits. Remember the Deanna Carter song from a few years back, “Did I Shave My Legs for This?” There were a few points during this week’s ad:tech Chicago conference when I was thinking “Did I brave air travel for this?” Overall, I was somewhat disappointed with ad:tech Chicago, billed as “The Event for Digital Marketing!” (Be sure to remember that exclamation point, guys! Good copy needs more exclamation points!) To be fair, thanks to issues with ...
