How does Facebook plan on attracting new advertisers? By attacking the number one channel of internet advertising on the web: search. Facebook has launched a new banner campaign that goes directly at the hear of search. There campaign model? Not search but instead banners. The banner campaign suggests that you should “reach your customers before they start searching.” One of the animated banner campaigns has been embedded below. The banner says “Your business is about ...

This article has been republished from the Social Times. According to this July’s comscore data the fastest growing locations for search are Facebook and MySpace. MySpace had 539 million searches and Facebook had 173 million and posted 20 and 10 percent growth, respectively. My guess is that these searches are only domestic searches which would account for the large difference. Whatever the case is these numbers are far below Google’s search volume which fell just ...

Hey you! Don’t let me catch you adding too many friends or messaging too many users or you’ll wind up getting blocked! You may have seen it yourself, a warning dialog box which pops up and alerts you that your activity is of a rate similar to someone that is abusing the system (a spammer). Every day I receive emails from people that have been banned and they can’t get access to the site and ...

Today eMarketer, the source of the most accurate data in the world (just joking), released a report suggesting that 58 percent of people globally don’t know what social networking is. The Netherlands appeared to be the most acitve group polled as 36.4 percent of those polled are active on a social network. The findings show that 3.48 billion people still are unaware of what social networks are. Does this survey really provide any contextual relevance? ...

Last year when Facebook opened there platform there was a sudden influx of brands looking to gain access to a new channel for branded exposure. The demand was significant and just in the past couple weeks we have seen an increasing number of applications come out from companies like Context Optional and Buddy Media. How do these new applications differ from websites of the past and how what new opportunities do they provide? What are ...

Tonight Facebook announced that they made a few changes to application iframe canvas pages which “provide them with more of the functionality previously available only to FBML-based applications.” This means that applications will now be able to use XFBML, an extension of FBML which works on iFrame pages. These features also give application developers access to cached friend lists and preload FQL data. There are a few other changes as well: In addition to the ...

It’s no secret that virtual goods are a big business but how big exactly, nobody has really been totally clear. Yesterday Jeremy Liew of Lightspeed Venture Partners released an analysis done by the company which suggested that Facebook could generate up to $43 million this year alone from virtual goods. How does Facebook generate so much money from their virtual goods? Well as Eric Eldon points out Facebook generates a lot of demand for their ...

For all you developers that also thought that building a Facebook Connect plugin would be brilliant idea, you might want to stop development. While the timetable for releasing this plugin isn’t clear, there’s a good chance that it will be released in the coming weeks. Facebook Blog Comments Facebook Connect is still in beta ...

This afternoon I got to thinking about various opportunities for businesses to leverage Facebook and realized that Facebook is not taking advantage of one of their greatest opportunities: search. A few months ago, Microsoft announced that they were going to begin offering Microsoft Live search results for Facebook as well as search ads. So far nothing has been implemented. The most important search results on Facebook is people but many users are regularly search for ...

Yesterday afternoon I read an interesting article by Caroline McCarthy about how BuzzCity, the company behind the mobile social network MyGamma, has raised $10 million. According to McCarthy, “MyGamma is geared toward ‘unwired’ customers–those who have a mobile device but lack access to either a PC or a reliable broadband connection.” In other words it helps those that are unconnected get connected with other people that were also previously unconnected. It’s an interesting model and ...

I can’t tell you what the long-term effects of a large market for free is but most of the implications appear to be negative. The only person supposedly “benefiting” from this free market is consumers and the few companies that can get acquired. Do you think that the market for free is sparking innovation or is it really stunting it? What do you think the best models of revenue generation in this environment will be?

It’s a simple widget-like feature which enables you to view other people in the network that are following that blog. It is extremely similar to the MyBlogLog community features and it extends Google Friend Connect. One interesting thing about this new feature is that you can import the “Blogs I’m Following” directly into your ...

Yes, I love calling Facebook the Twitter and FriendFeed killer but I seriously think they may have one-upped the competition on their latest release: the Live Feed. You can sit and watch in real-time what is taking place with your friends across their profiles in an unfiltered manner. This is similar to the functionality the Twitter Search (previously Summize) provided. Rather than the AP Newswire going across your screen, you now have a live activity ...
