I’ve been following updating.me for a short while now, and was thinking about trying it out after it came out of beta, until today. The site is along the same lines as ping.fm and updates all your social services in one go such as Twitter, FriendFeed, Plurk, Identi.ca, Rejaw and also supports less mainstream platforms such as Leo Laports Twit Army and Koornk. The thing that makes updating.me stand out from the rest of the ...

Thanks to the hard work of Nima Yousefi, Will Carlough and Andy Maloney, we have a Scrippets plugin that seems to be working pretty reliably. It’s installed at this site now, and we’ll be seeding it out to a few other screenwriting-oriented websites over the next few days to make sure it plays well with others. Like most programming projects, getting to 90% was easy. Within hours after my original call to coders, there were ...

Great article on helping & supporting creative organizations by Ed Catmull, one of Pixar’s founders: How Pixar Fosters Collective Creativity. Here’s something from the introduction: I don’t think our success is largely luck. Rather, I believe our adherence to a set of principles and practices for managing creative talent and risk is responsible. Pixar is a community in the true sense of the word. We think that lasting relationships matter, and we share some basic ...

I’ve become familiar with Michael Pollan through books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food. Tonight I ran across the images above, which are pictures of his writing house. He built it himself (which is documented in an earlier book called A Place of My Own). Larger pictures are available on his website. I think he’s got Creativityist HQ pretty well beat. a michael pollan hq

Recently at a Family Mart convenience store I encountered 黑背 (”Black Back”) comics, the creations of Zhang Yuanying (张元英). I’ve been a fan of independent comics for a while, but I’ve had trouble finding much I like in China. The main thing that has turned me off of mainland Chinese comics is their highly derivative nature. They all seem like copies of Japanese manga! Not 黑背, though. While it does borrow some elements from Japanese ...

It has always seemed odd to me that computer science refers to the number of operations necessary to execute an algorithm as the “complexity” of the algorithm. For example, an algorithm that takes O(N3) operations is more complex than an algorithm that takes O(N2) operations. The big-O analysis of algorithms is important, but “complexity” is the wrong name for it. Software engineering is primarily concerned with mental complexity, the stress on your brain when working ...

This one is a bit of a shock. Joe Eszterhas is the screenwriter best known for his sleazy, violent films like Basic Instinct, Sliver and Showgirls. In fact, the main character in Showgirls was named after his second wife. But now, unbelievably, Eszterhas has changed his tune: He and his second wife, Naomi, had just moved from Malibu to a suburb of Cleveland - where he had grown up; she was from nearby Mansfield. They ...

It seems like New York firms have a thing for bay windows, but not the usual symmetrical bays prevalent in residential architecture. I'm talking about angled bays that project from facades asymmetrically to orient views and jazz up building exteriors. The most well known recent example of this architectural element is the Switch Building in Manhattan's Lower East Side. The design by nARCHITECTS alternates these angled bays to give the building its name. A small building ...

Most birds drink by filling their mouth with water and then tilting their heads back to swallow.
