Opentape invites RIAA to play whack-a-mole post-Muxtape (15)

Ars Technica (1135) permalink
The RIAA may win its battle against the unlicensed music discovery service Muxtape. But an open source version that can be installed and run from any server means that everyone can share their favorite mixes now.Read More...Shared by Abhishek (6) Allan Haggett (15) Angus (42) brokekid (118) Creeva (38) dasmart (6) David Chartier (12) Esther Rudolph (1) Jason (77) Muhammad Saleem (233) Nirav (24) Patrick Gage Kelley (1) sarah (272) Tushar (19) War-N (5)- Abhishek said: "Whether Opentape truly has anything to do with Muxtape, the RIAA now has a whole new set of headaches. By striking down a centralized, streaming-only music discovery service like Muxtape, the RIAA has apparently inspired the release of a simple, decentralized software package for easily streaming and sharing music from any host and URL across the globe, with nary an affiliate link for a legitimate music shop in sight.Oops."
- Allan Haggett said: I downloaded a copy right away. I've not installed it yet, but I will. I will.
- Tushar said: The RIAA may be some of the dumbest people around. Instead of letting websites like Muxtape help them and maybe even working with them, they shut them down. They haven't done their research to figure out that websites like Muxtape or Pandora are most likely helping them much more than hurting them - I discovered 2 or 3 bands I probably would have never heard of on Muxtape in just a few days. That means that if I ever hear of a concert of one of these bands, I would probably try to go to it and I may actually buy merchandise or CDs. This is where the artist makes the most profit. At the moment, I downloaded pirated CDs from other means, but I may actually buy 1 or 2 of them. The RIAA should probably work on not going out of business by changing/revamping their model completely instead of this crap. What a useless association. The record labels should figure their stuff out and just drop the RIAA altogether.
