This afternoon LivingSocial published a white paper giving their lessons learned from building successful applications on the Facebook platform. The argument presented in the company’s white paper is that if developers take advantage of the profile publisher, “the recent losses in page views and engagement” resulting from the new site design “could be mitigated”. I definitely agree and as Mark Zuckerberg emphasized at f8, Facebook is all about sharing. LivingSocial made what I consider an ...

This afternoon Facebook launched the web search tool that’s powered by Microsoft Live. When you search for items within Facebook’s global search box at the top of the site, you receive the option to “Search the Web” if no results show up immediately for contacts in your contact list. This is a big moment for Facebook. One thing I noticed is that the ads displayed are relevant to the keywords entered and not to your ...

According to a new report out from Cloudmark, 20 to 40 percent of new profiles on Facebook could be fake. Neil Cook, the European head of technology services at Cloudmark stated “once set up with a portfolio of fake profiles, virus writers encourage users to click on links to malicious sites by including them on postings on other users’ walls or blogs.” This highlights the increasingly challenging battle that Facebook is facing with spammers. Facebook ...

Yesterday I wrote about how brands can succeed on Facebook. At the time I suggested that success for me personally is having an application within the leaderboard. Commenters immediately suggested that this position was a flawed one and after thinking about it further, I agree. The first step in launching a social media campaign or an individual campaign on Facebook is defining your objectives. Is Brand Building Important for All? One of the primary objectives ...

Over breakfast this morning I was talking with someone from a large media company who was trying to determine their social media strategy. During the conversation the individual inquired about what the best strategy is for launching new applications on Facebook and what their overall general social media strategy should be. Are Facebook Applications Part of Social Media? It’s easy to jump at the bait and say that Facebook applications are part of social media. ...

This afternoon word that Dustin Moskovitz, co-founder of Facebook, was leaving to start a new venture start to spread and within a short period of time, a number of blogs had access to a Facebook note posted by Moskovitz’s developer companion, Justin Rosenstein. Apparently Rosenstein and Moskovitz are leaving to create an enterprise level productivity software package. Sounds thrilling doesn’t it? Well, the duo is a geeky bunch and they are now moving on to ...

This morning the Irish Times reported that Facebook has confirmed its plans to establish one of its international headquarters in Dublin. The headquarters will be responsible for activities taking place within the company “across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.” Last week I wrote about Facebook hiring people in India, Hong Kong, Syndney, and the U.K. In a statement to the Irish Times, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, said “After exploring various locations throughout ...

Yesterday Seth Goldstein, CEO of SocialMedia posted an interesting note on Facebook about the paradox of social advertising. As you’ll see in his note, it is summed up with “This is the paradox of social advertising: unlimited inventory of impressions that users have come to ignore, but very limited inventory of commercial experiences that users are opting in to engage with.” Nobody will deny that the industry faces some substantial hurdles and given SocialMedia’s leadership ...

Early this evening a few users began reporting that a new login page began appearing for Facebook. This makes sense given the company’s redesign. This new homepage design and the redesign of their login page may signal the final transfer of users over to the new design. While we can’t confirm that all users have been transferred, there are many signs pointing to this being the final touch. Even though the new design had launched, ...

Just recently at F8, Facebook announced the launch of the ability to integrate your website’s users with users inside Facebook through a technology they call Facebook Connect. Such technology enables your website’s users to login using their Facebook username and password, right on your site, and link their profile and friend information directly to your own site for display and access outside of Facebook. Once authenticated, your site can also make calls for those users ...
