One of the things that I noticed immediately when I made the SmallestDotNet was that Firefox was reporting the version of the .NET Framework installed. There's a Firefox extension that is installed with .NET 3.5SP1. I was stoked about this because I'd like users of BabySmash to be able to use ClickOnce from Firefox to launch it. ClickOnce and Firefox When you install .NET Framework 3.5SP1, there's a key written to the registry whether Firefox ...

Recently while talking to a friend I said something like "Oh, yes, my wife send me a meeting request for that." My friend was shocked. "How did you get your wife to send you Outlook Invites?" they said. I was surprised they thought it was a big deal that we might manage our lives and appointments the same way a business runs their meetings. Why manage one's calendar with attention and detail at work, the ...

I really like presenting and traveling around and meeting people, but I just hate being away from my kids. It's visceral. It's physically painful. I bring them whenever I can, but during this last trip to New Zealand and Australia it wasn't possible and I was away for 8 days. Almost killed me. Since I work from home, when I need to talk to folks in Redmond I use Office Communicator, sometimes ooVoo if we ...

I bought an HP MediaSmart Windows Home Server last Christmas, and haven't thought much about it since. It sits on the shelf and is pretty. Actually, that's not totally true, I did upgrade it to Power Pack 1 recently, but that was a 10 minute thing. For the most part, it's a conversation piece on a shelf in my new(ish) home office. Now, the story. I sold my wife's laptop to Shawn recently as she ...

While reading source today, I saw some code in the wild today that looked roughly like this (not the actual code): type = typeof(T);if (type == typeof(Boolean)){ returnValue = (T)((object)Convert.ToBoolean(value));}else if (type == typeof(String)){ returnValue = (T)((object)value);}else if (type == typeof(Int16)){ returnValue = (T)((object)Convert.ToInt16(value));}else if (type == typeof(Int32)){ returnValue = (T)((object)Convert.ToInt32(value));}//...and on and on for a dozen+ types You get the idea. This isn't that uncommon, I've seen it more of than not. The person ...

There's been some confusion about the size of the .NET Framework. The .NET Framework is not really a 200+ meg download. Which installer do I use? Here's the whole thing in a nutshell for Developers, ISVs, and Administrators. Offline Installer - One single file that can be run offline and can install the .NET Framework any system it's run on. It's complete, all platforms, installable offline. Online Installer - A 2.7 meg setup program that ...

Last October I posted a Macro-quasi-hack to Disable Reply To All and Forward in Outlook within your own company network. The technique uses a macro to flip a metadata bit in a message. Of course the only REAL way truly to disable Reply to All and Forward is to use IRM (Intellectual Rights Management) in Outlook 2003/7. However, this technique was useful to a lot of people as it is super simple and can stop ...

Folks were hassling me in the comments for not posting the picosecond that .NET 3.5 SP1 came out (or, as I like to call it, .NET 3.6 - although the bosses really don't like that). First, the obvious stuff. Should I fear this release? I wouldn't. The SP1 Framework is full of goodness. The VS Installer is slow (it was for me) but I just shut everything down, ran it, and was patient. It's POSSIBLE. ...

When I worked with Travis Illig (who is the origin of the term "Hanselminute," by the way) and Stuart Thompson at Corillian/CheckFree, we had a project manager who didn't totally "get" stuff. What I mean is that we'd be in a meeting, perhaps a feature meeting or something, and we'd be firing on all cylinders. Everyone was working well together, communicating clearly, finishing each other's sentences, just an all around great day. Designs become clear, ...

I have to open application when a file (.ext) is clicked (File is associated with that application like .doc with WINWORD). Application should be single instance.
