Last week, it was very clear to most of us not in line for the iPhone that the most exciting aspect of the iPhone 3G release were the GPS capabilities. We haven’t seen more announcements for locationally aware social networks come across our newsbox here at Mashable (or anything that takes advantage of GPS technology) before or since. One such network is one called Whrrl. It’s not particular to the iPhone, but it is one ...

Typically I give a popular service around an hour to get its act together before posting about its downtime, but for the last 15 minutes or so my Twitter friend timeline has been lighting up with messages about Facebook being down. Being Friday and all, I figured why not have some fun with it. Twitter’s “fail whale” has become somewhat iconic, at least for those of us that use the site regularly and have become ...

This is a guest post written by Bernard Moon, Vice President of the Lunsford Group, a private holding company consisting of entities in technology, media, research & consulting, health care, investment boutique, and real estate. Bernard blogs at Silicon Moon. The recent announcement of Google’s Lively product has created a stir in some circles, but for me it’s a yawner. Why? It’s another Google product not related to their bread and butter of search and ...

Because they’re typically steeped in subjectivity, product reviews tend to be more effective when grouped together. There’s a wikipedian event called Wikimania 2008 happening in Alexandria, Egypt from 17-19 July. One of the main topics discussed is something called “flagged revisions”, an experiment that’s already taken place in some iterations of Wikipedia - its German version, for instance. Simply put, it means that no changes will appear on Wikipedia without the approval of an expert. Without going into the technical implications of this obviously large-scale operation, or even the problems that ...

Some of the first-day statistics are in for JibJab’s video ditty for the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. And a number of figures, when placed side by side, are pretty interesting. The industry giant YouTube netting just over 100k, placing it third, where it ...

Google today unveiled a campaign for a bit of AdWords “consolidation,” as it’s being phrased. The objective is to make for potentially more effective management of “keyword-targeted” and “placement-targeted” advertising campaigns. Simply put, it’s to enhance targeting on the Google’s network, which allows ads to be placed on specific pages or anywhere on the Web deemed relevant through keyword association. Exciting news? Perhaps not. The ability do channel advertisements through both processes has been available ...

Many companies are intrigued by the concept of social media, but have no idea how to actually integrate it into business practices. Changing employee behavior is challenging, and social media participation is often looked at as an additional burden rather than leveraged to improve the efficiency of a current task. Unless traditional communications are replaced with social media ...
