I’ve long admired pastor, blogger and cartoonist David Hayward, aka The Naked Pastor. (That’s Naked. Not “Nekkid.” He’s not up to anything.) I’ve been excited about this interview and it’s proven to be everything I hoped for. David has a fascinating journey and a point of view the IM audience will appreciate. I’ve already gotten one email telling me I should have nothing to do with him, so he’s good people. David pastors a Vineyard ...

UPDATE: Comment moderation has returned, and more than a few of you aren’t going to make it through, so save your time. Blame Bill Kinnon. And if talk about sex bothers you, then you probably need another religion. You’re out of luck in this one. Dear Ed Young, It was the grin that really got to me. The arrogant, know-it-all, self-confident, re-inventing the wheel, just got me some grin. The “I am a young pastor ...

NOTE: This is a provocative post. Stay on track in the discussion please. No personal attacks or mischaracterizations will be tolerated from anyone. No atheist/Christian debate will be allowed. (Civil discussion, of course. But name calling, blaming, general accusations, a la Bill Maher, etc. No. And remember, we are not discussing Michael Spencer. If you want to call me names, great. Start a blog. Have you ever been part of, let’s say, a committee assigned ...

The other day a strange feeling came over me. Don’t get me wrong about what I’m about to say here. It was just a feeling. I’m not claiming any powers of discernment or certainty. I got the distinct feeling there’s something wrong with a lot of people who say they are Jesus-followers/believers. If you want to supply your own vocabulary, like “aren’t saved” or “aren’t Christians,” do so at your own risk. I’m not saying ...

First, read Scot McKnight’s BeliefNet piece, “What Do Evangelicals Do Well?” I’m not Scot McKnight, and I don’t play him on TV. I’m nowhere in his league on New Testament scholarship and he’s got far more world-wide experience than me in describing evangelicals. He’s written lots of great books and has a classy blog. So of course, I have to disagree with his optimism about evangelicalism. Well….not entirely. I agree with everything Scot has to ...

UPDATE: 11:13:08 Open commenting is now over, and moderated commenting will be the norm for the foreseeable future. Expect ACTIVE moderation. Several years ago I wrote an essay on sola fide- salvation by faith alone- that I really liked, but no one else seemed to like. At the time, when I was just starting to get a little attention for my writing, I thought that it was simply overlooked. Today, I have another theory. Evangelicals ...

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that ...

We talk about the evangelical wilderness around here a lot. It’s sometimes academic, and sometimes it’s very personal to all of us. These are some of my thoughts from there today. If God has taught me anything, it’s that you (yes YOU) are out there, and I’m not the only one. This post is for a particular group of people. People who really don’t have any choices about what church you attend. Through circumstance or ...

It seems that politics and the culture war have dominated posting here at IM recently, which is understandable given recent events. I was ready to go back to talking about something more related to the broader interests of this blog, when I ran across this piece at Patrol Magazine. By the way, if you aren’t a reader of Patrol, you’re missing out on a great magazine that’s evolving into something special right in front of ...

I Timothy 2:1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. ...

I just completed watching the documentary Hell House with a group of my advanced Bible students. It’s giving us an opportunity to ask and discuss important issues about our own experiences of Christian evangelism. Several students have participated in Hell Houses, while others find it to be offensive and disturbing. If you don’t know what a Hell House is, you might read this review of the film, which is much better than the wikipedia entry. ...

UPDATE: How did Jesus Fight The Culture War? Today being election day, and many of my evangelical friends being in somewhat of a foul mood, for reasons that, as of 12:28 p.m., are suspected and not yet clear, I found myself thinking about a fellow I’ll call Bob. I met Bob while I was on sabbatical. He was a very dedicated conservative evangelical, and a pleasant enough fellow….when he wasn’t angry. And Bob was angry. ...

Over the last two years, I’ve raised the issue of the need for positive, level-headed, analytical and appreciative critical engagement with the theology of John Piper. I believe such a need is pressing, particularly as more and more future pastors and ministers take in Piper without any awareness that other solid evangelicals may appreciate him AND disagree with him at points. While N.T. Wright’s theology has been examined from all sides almost as a test ...

I was watching the documentary “Hell House” with my students in Advanced Bible, and one of the preachers kept saying that Satan wants to take as many “souls” as possible to hell with him, so the church is in a competition with the devil for souls. I’ve heard this hundreds of times in my life, but it suddenly struck me: Where in the Bible does it say Satan wants to take “souls” to hell? It’s ...

Yesterday, I experienced the great part of being a teacher; one of those experiences that make all the others worth it. It was in my advanced placement English IV class. Our brightest seniors. Other Osteen posts here at IM: Osteen Redux, The Mystery of Joel Osteen, Outing Joel Osteen. Newsweek reviews Victoria Osteen’s new book. Thank God for Newsweek’s willingness to say what 90% of evangelicals won’t say. With that story, Victoria unconsciously articulates the problem so many outsiders have with Joel and, by extension, with her. Joel Osteen is one of the most popular pastors in the country, but both he and Victoria seem, from the outside ...

Here’s a good post on “How to have a great Catholic Halloween.” No Protestants are harmed. It’s OK. As October 31st looms, it’s time for true confessions.
