“The customer is not always right. The truth is you have to sort out who’s right and who’s wrong for your app,” advises 37signals in their book Getting Real. “If you try to please everyone, you won’t please anyone.” In order to create the software you want to create, you sometimes have to say no to your users. Video hosting site Vimeo did just that yesterday. Lauded as one of the “classiest” video hosting sites ...

A friend recommended that I read Getting Real by 37signals yesterday. It was great! Written for small teams building [their own] Web 2.0 apps. I agreed with much and found some good things to ponder too! Ponder because some of the recommended approaches will be very hard to handle within the traditional client/consultant relationship. The other approaches challenge traditional user-centred design guidelines. Which is just fine with me! Getting Real: p.2 Start with the interface, ...

Neat trick: Amazon just made one of my iPhone apps crash -- Twinkle, the Twitter app by Tapulous. Not on purpose, of course. But still, a reminder to companies that relying on third-party "cloud" hosting services -- even from giant, normally excellent Amazon -- has its drawbacks. What happened? Sometime this morning, Amazon's (AMZN) S3 storage service went down. Or, according to Amazon's official note, S3 is "experiencing elevated error rates." A lot of companies ...

Supporting multiple browsers is too hard. I give up. From now on, I will only support the latest browser. No, not the latest version of each browser, but rather just the most recently released browser. For now, I will support Firefox 3 as it was just recently released. Safari 4 is in the works, so when that comes out I’ll update my apps to that. Also, I’ll be sure to add sniffers and detectors to ...

Reading through some comments on yCombinator’s “hacker news” board tonight (which my previous post was just featured on, welcome new readers/subscribers), I dove into a thread about a post I’d read earlier in the day by 37Signals about some of their early guerrilla marketing techniques that they used to generate buzz around their products, ideas, and methodologies. The comments struck me as interesting: readers were talking a decent amount of smack, as commenters tend to, ...

As of August 15th, 2008, future features and any improvements made to existing features may not work with IE 6. If you are using IE 7, Firefox 2 or 3, or Safari, you don’t have to do anything — everything will continue as is for you. However, if you are using IE 6, and you want to make sure everything works, you will need to upgrade your browser to either IE 7, Firefox, or Safari. ...

Filed under: iPod Family, Software, iPhone, App Store, SDKAround here we all seem to be addicted to GTD applications (especially those that sync with online services). That's why it is only fitting that we would mention a new iPhone application named Outpost. Outpost manages your 37Signals' Basecamp projects on your iPhone. Basecamp, as you might already know, is 37Signals flagship application for managing clients, projects, tasks, etc. However, with a native application to manage Basecamp ...

Phasing out support for IE 6 across all 37signals products on August 15, 2008. Interesting move considering BaseCamp is used for communicating with (often corporate) clients. It would be nice to see the browser stats behind the decision.

Keep an eye out on Copenhagen-based help desk-on-demand company Zendesk. The firm, started by Mikkel Svane, just raised half a million dollars in seed money from angel investors including Pageflakes co-founder Christoph Janz. Just like 37Signals offers you project management tools or hosted chat, Zendesk offers you a simple way to manage all incoming help desk inquires. It’s not sexy, like some social networks, but it is useful and fully featured. No surprise the company ...

Five years ago, Michael McDerment built an invoicing system for his web design business. Today, FreshBooks lets nearly 400,000 users invoice their clients, track time and manage expenses electronically. Not all are paying — the service is free for users with up to three clients — but it’s growing fast. “We’re seeing double-digit growth for both users and paying customers each month since our May 2004 launch,” he said. McDerment, who is also a co-organizer ...

A few weeks back I was invited to speak at a TiE Event here in Chicago. The panel included Lucas Roh, CEO of Hostway, Mike Domeck, CEO of Ticketsnow, and mysef. It was moderated by Matt McCall of Portage Ventures. I really enjoyed being on the panel and learning from the other panelists. We all have different backgrounds, different businesses, and different ways of running our businesses. Lucas and Mike are sharp. Out of everything ...
