Before I got waylaid with traveling I wrote that each of the various open source revenue strategies might have its place depending on the stage of commoditization and the short- and long-term goals of the individual vendor. I was thinking it might be possible to describe the lifecycle of open source strategies, but I never got around to following up on that… until now. I hereby present the five ages of Vendor-led open source revenue ...

…is the title of this post written by Tim Bray a few days ago in which he outlined the directions he would like to see his employer take to improve its fortunes. He also invited others to continue the thought process. Many have already done so (I’ll include the best in tomorrow’s CAOS Links post) and given my recent constructive criticism of Sun’s open source strategy I feel compelled to provide some answers as well ...

There’s been plenty of reaction this week to Sun’s restructuring announcement from last Friday. That announcement included the inevitable (cutting 15-18% of the workforce), the expected (organisational changes), and the surprising (the departure of Rich Green). The conventional wisdom appears to be that Sun is positioning to sell off some of its less profitable product lines and focus on those hardware lines that are currently delivering the goods, as well as its open source software ...

Yesterday in "the other place" I was berating Gartner for its inability to understand the reality of open source, and now here's someone else from that strange world of "research" that simply doesn't understand the basics - in this case, digital music:Music cannot just be 'for free' anymore than cars or houses can 'just be for free'. If people aren't paid, they don't make the product.Sigh. Once more, then, children - and do pay attention ...

Oldboy and a Funeral Remake Hell / Dustin Rowles There's a very small, but very possessive number of folks who have seen the 2003 South Korean film, Oldboy, from director Chan Wook-Park. The movie made less than $1 million at North American box-offices, and were it not for the fact that it's foreign-made, it'd have certainly been included on our original The 10 Best Movies You've Never Seen (ooooh. We should totally do a foreign-movie ...

It might not officially be titled Island of the Dead just yet, but it is our official first look at a zombie from the film. I wish we had something a bit more exciting to show everyone today than a few random zombie photos, but the entire country is focused on the upcoming election. Thanks to both USA Today and Bloody Disgusting, we've got the first photos and more information about Romero's next zombie lick. ...

One cliche that has made its rounds in education in the past decade is that "rigor, relevance and relationships" are the three keys to a successful high school education. And I guess it would be hard to argue against the idea that a challenging curriculum connected to student interests and delivered by people who enjoy working with teens would produce better results than unrelated fluff presented by militant old women who tracked out ages ago ...

Matt Asay has an interesting post today on how its getting harder to distinguish between open source and SaaS which reminded me of the presentation I was scheduled to give at a recent SugarCRM event in London. Due to illness I was forced to cancel my appearance (and it’s a good job I did as my second child coincidentally chose that day to make an appearance - I at least avoided having to run off ...

What happens between a company announcing its intention to license its code using an open source license and the resulting project being launched? Mostly the answer involves a whole lot of legal discussions as the intellectual property and licensing issues are ironed out and the processes and structures are put in place to support the new project. These sort of arrangements might be fascinating to those of us that study open source development and licensing ...

(Or “freedom of speech won’t feed my children”) Last month I noted that Matt Asay, one of the highest profile proponents of open source software, had changed his position on the use of proprietary extensions as a means of attracting paying customers to software based on open source code. Having previously advocated a 100% open source approach, Matt conceded that “If adding a hint of proprietary software to a solution is done in such a ...
