This is a shot of three eagles fighting over a fish in Homer, Alaska, from March 2008. You can see the fish at the top of the image flying by itself, but it was caught in its fall by another eagle. Particularly amazing work by Jose Hernadez, this photo won the 2008 International Photography Contest of National Geographic Magazine. Interesting article about Honda @ Forbes... At American auto companies, finance guys and marketers rise to the top. Not at Honda... Of all the bizarre subsidiaries that big companies can find themselves with, Harmony Agricultural Products, founded and owned by Honda Motor, is one of the strangest. This small company near Marysville, Ohio produces soybeans for tofu. Soybeans? Honda couldn't brook the sight of the shipping containers that brought parts from Japan to its nearby ...

Longtime auto analyst John Casesa, who now runs a consulting company, says, "There's not a company on earth that better understands the culture of engineering."What a good quote. Reading this really makes Honda seem like a mecca for great thinking.

I spent a great amount of time in the past month creating, editing, and publishing the following video about the causes of the current credit crisis. My focus was nearly 100% on subprime mortgage lending.I have always been sure that better explanations and better presentations existed, but I was quite comfortable with my finished project. It wasn't until today that I realized where I goofed. I was too serious. Sometimes, when things get really bad, ...

Bayesian coalescent inference of major human mitochondrial DNA haplogroup expansions in Africa. Atkinson QD, Gray RD, Drummond AJ. Past population size can be estimated from modern genetic diversity using coalescent theory. Estimates of ancestral human population dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa can tell us about the timing and nature of our first steps towards colonizing the globe. Here, we combine Bayesian coalescent inference with a dataset of 224 complete human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences to estimate ...
