Advice and asking others for answers seems to be the theme of the week for me. I sometimes visit a forum called Our Ultimate Reality. The subjects on this forum get pretty wild and abstract sometimes. This week one discussion has been about the origin of the universe. The discussion got into the void and randomness and order from chaos, etc. As I was reading a reply I said to myself Do I need an ...

He's smart, funny, and a gifted writer, and if you are not sobbing by the end of "King of Masochists" then you are pretty much a terrible person. But another great entry is "The 16 ...

Recently I’ve heard stories from management in my company and others about how Gen-Y is becoming a “problem,” and that managers are beginning to be intimidated by the thought of hiring us to fill the gaps left by retiring Baby Boomers. You’ve heard of our common traits: we modify the dress code, we surf Facebook at work, we get in late, want to leave early, and we take a long lunch somewhere in there. All ...

Today’s employers seem to want more of our time than ever. In the US, the average worker puts in 55 hours a week; in Europe and other places where short working weeks have long been the norm, workers are struggling to hold on to their reasonable schedules as employers look to the US model in an effort to increase their bottom lines. Email, text messaging, cell phones, and Blackberries keep us tethered to the office ...

Marriage advice. Who needs it? How many times have you sat there after a fight (or a spirited discussion) with your wife and wondered what just happened? You sit there thinking, “I don’t understand what I did wrong! She’s the one who got all upset, and now I’m in trouble? What happened?” You need additional help. Of course, since you’re a typical strong male, you know you can’t ask for help. You’re stuck. What can ...

Hello to all who are thinking about blogging. I’ve been at it since mid 2004, and I think I have one important lesson to share. There may be other lessons I could offer, but I think I am more qualified than anyone to talk about this particular topic. Google seems to think I am too… I would suggest that you not use any combination of the words “strange”, “weird”, “sex”, and “ideas”. For instance, if ...

I’ve been reading a lot about productivity and thinking about how I can be more productive in my freelance career. In April, Diana wrote “10 Productivity Hacks for Freelancers.” Here are seven more. 1. Delegate. Delegate tasks to your spouse or kids, especially when you’re under a tight deadline and need all the help you can get. You can also hire people to take on jobs for you. For example, I now send my interview ...

There are a LOT of tech conferences out there, some of which I attend. Here are some tips for you if you’re attending any: DO IT. Seriously, if you can afford the money and time to travel to attend a tech conference I recommend you do so. Of course, this is assuming you’re in a line of business which could benefit from attendance. Bring lots of business cards. And a related tip, put info on ...

My main advice is only go if it is absolutely beneficial - if you need the networking that will come of it, or it will help you promote your business or personal brand, or there is something you could learn from it that otherwise you couldn't find online. Also, if you're a blogger and there's something that would help you benefit your readers it can also be a good time to go. Don't just go to conferences for the sake of going though.

Earlier this month was my 1 year anniversary of bike commuting. In a year, I went from feeling like I had to puke after a 4 mile ride to using a bike as my primary mode of transport for commuting and running errands.I figured I'd write up a few tips for people who want to try this out (the commuting part, not the puking part).Decide if bike commuting is for youThe rewards of bike commuting ...

One of the better bike posts I've read. I strongly agree with all of this except for the downsides. I've really never felt like I was going to get killed by a car, probably because I'm extremely aware that any car running a light, with me in the intersection, means I'm dead. Also be aware that only a very small fraction of bike accidents happen from rear-ending. Beginning commuters are usually overly freaked out by what's coming from behind, and less aware that visibility is the key.And I agree, the cars can wait/fuck themselves. Get your big ass right between their eyes where they can see you and have no chance of passing you, if you're at speed. Take the lane, at ANY moment you feel there's risk from doors or stuff you can't see.

They say having children changes everything. While it’s unquestionably a remarkable time in one’s life, I can also see how the transition introduces obvious limitations. Suddenly you have dependent beings of life to care for. Responsibility kicks in, compelling you to dedicate a significant portion of your time and attention to the best interests of the little ones. Combine this with the obvious physical and lifestyle limitations that come with age and it seems to ...

While other blogs are fighting for four-day work weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about maximizing my commitment to my career (current job and future). Even in the corporate world that entrepreneurial mindset of getting it done and then some, no matter what, is a ...
