Filed under: Airlines, News American Airlines flight 1586 on its way to Toronto blew a tire on its takeoff from LAX earlier today, requiring them to return to the airport. As you might already know, however, you can't land an aircraft with a full tank of gas -- it's just too hard on the brakes -- so the pilots had to kill some time.As a result, instead of the pleasant transcontinental flight that flight 1586 ...

Now that in-flight internet is becoming a normal option, a certain taboo activity is popping up more and more during those long, lonely flights. A few airlines have taken the issue upon themselves to lock down certain themed sites but that doesn’t rule out already downloaded material. Then other airlines, such as American Airlines, are offering unfiltered service and thus leaving the discretion up to the user — and flight attendants. It isn’t like attendants ...

While the network blocks most VoIP services, Phweet can connect two people using a Flash app. Aircell, the company responsible for the system, is aware of the oversight, but it remains to be seen whether this ...

VOIP enthusiast and marketing guy Andy Abramson tricked his way around the content filters on American Airlines' new inflight broadband. Abramson succeeded in conducting a long voice call to a friend on an American flight by using Phweet, which embeds the call as an audio stream inside a Flash player inside your browser. "I don't mean a five-second hi. I mean, a real conversation." Aw, you didn't talk to the guy in the next seat?

I find myself on AA flight #3 headed to LAX from NY’s JFK. Today marks the first day of Aircell’s Gogo inflight service going live for the masses. It will be available on flights from NYC to LA, Miami and San Francisco. The 8AM flight to Miami from JFK is not a 767-200, so those going south won’t be privy to Aircell’s Gogo service. The flight is full from what I’m told and Aircell had ...

American Airlines is revamping its frequent flier program to include a fee to upgrade economy class tickets to business and first class. In addition to 15k frequent flier miles, AAdvantage members will, starting Oct. 1, have to pay between $50 and $350 for an upgrade. American Airlines blamed high fuel prices and rising airfares for the change. "The disparity between discount and premium tickets is too great to be offset by miles alone," an AA ...
