Because I've been a bad, bad blogger of late - blame my life: there was a hell of a lot happening in July-August, most of which I can't go into detail about - there have been quite a few performances I've attended recently that I haven't had time to blog about: until now. Apologies for the brevity of the following 'reviews' (perhaps 'impressions' would be a better word); I've got rather a lot to catch ...

After reading Venkatesh Rao’s essay on The Bloody-Minded Pleasures of Engineering. I can’t help but think about why I am an engineer. And not surprisingly of course I come to the immediate conclusion; Because I am. Seriously, I can’t really help it. You see I’m pretty much an Nth generation engineer. The more I explore my personal family history, the more I discover the variety of engineers, architects, craftsmen (and craftswomen) and other creative types ...

Of course, if you want a picture of your little girl, it's more frustrating than ...

What could a pocket-sized computer be? It could be a new kind of album extra (yawn), a new kind of generative musical format that samples and responds to the world around it (whoo). It could be a more effective controller (fun), or an Indian drone (really). The Apple iPod touch / iPhone, as always, brings both wonder (potential as an art platform or recording device) and trouble (respectively, restrictions on who can see your art ...

For many enthusiasts, pimping out car sound systems (and even bicycles in some circles) is a time-honored tradition. However, Dutch artist Olaf Mooij may have taken this pastime to extreme new levels with his DJ Mobile. Inspired by the Popemobile and the song “God is a DJ” by Faithless, Mooij created a rolling PA system complete with two turntables and several gigantic speakers that look more like rockets. Details are scarce on the system itself, ...

When Disney conceived of making its psychedelic masterpiece Alice in Wonderland, it asked master illustrator Mary "It's a Small World" Blair to draw up a series of concept sketches for the art direction of the film. Blair's art was never used, alas -- for she made some of the most striking and lovely and just plain weird-ass art that anyone had ever done in the Alice canon (you can see many of them in this ...

Movie Voice Guy Don LaFontaine Has Died

Jennifer Maestre, who should change her name to Jennifer "Maestro", has created these fantastic sculptures out of pencils. Acccording to herself she took "hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together." Either she had way too much time on her hands, or just happened to be an incredibly talented art freak. I think it was the freaky ...

You can’t design without type. However, yon can use only type (or mostly only type) to create breath-taking designs. In fact, many graphic designers and artists take exactly this route to communicate their ideas through their works. The results are sometimes crazy, sometimes artsy, sometimes beautiful, but often just different from things we’re used to. Thus designers explore new horizons and we explore new viewing perspectives which is what inspiration is all about. You can’t ...
