“As my blog has grown in popularity, we realized we were ready to switch to a platform offering more programming options. After careful research, that new platform will be Wordpress, which we hope to launch tomorrow with an exciting photo gallery from my most recent trip to Mexico.” — Martha Stewart. Ms. Stewart was previously on Typepad. Hat tip: Joe Clark.

Unlike Sen. McCain, I’m not a gambler, but I’d put $5 on Palin being replaced with Bobby Jindal by October. To “be with her family,” of course. Apart from Bristol’s bump and her “undecided” mother-in-law, there are too many potential scandals to count. Just as she cancels out the experience argument, an Alaska successionist is weirder than knowing one of the Weather Underground. The firing of Walt Monegan is easier to understand than the Rezko ...

This is my dream for Obama’s first press conference after the inauguration: Obama walks to the podium. Suddenly old-school hip hop starts playing and Obama yells, “Yo! Yo! Yo my negroes! Where all the white women at up in the hizz-ouse?” Once the screams of horror and panic die down the music will stop, and Obama will calmly say, “Yeah, that’s what I thought. Screw you honkey motherfuckers.”

In a world where people love to talk about “decentralized” this and “open source” that, Rohit makes the excellent point that much of Apple’s success comes as a result of its tight-fisted control over “distribution” — which doesn’t sound as sexy as “design.”

I know this is a technology blog rather than a political or personal blog, but two things are weighing on my mind. First off is Obama’s speech last night. Regardless of your political leanings, his call for people to come together and take action for the greater good was inspiring. The second is Hurricane Gustav. These two events have the potential to reinforce the power that individual people have. For as long as I’ve been ...

And then there was the story of Charles. Chuck, like so many of us, spent too much time online. How much is too much? Let me put it to you this way. When he got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, he told her how he felt in words that just sprung from his heart fully formed. He explained that he would never give her up or let her down. He would ...

Put this in the category of “you gotta be kidding me.” Microsoft has applied for and received a patent (U.S. Patent #7,415,666) that essentially patents “Page Up/Page Down” functionality. The patent (Timothy D Sellers, Heather L. Grantham, Joshua A. Dersch) that was filed in March 2005 is yet another proof that our patent system is as (if not more) dysfunctional as Britney Spears. Method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments A method ...

Alejandro Jodorowsky originally wanted to direct Dune. “[Salvador] Dalí agrees with much enthusiasm the idea to play the Emperor of the galaxy. He wants to film in Cadaquès and to use as throne a toilet made up of two intersected dolphins. The tails will form the feet and the two open mouths will be used one to receive the “wee”, the other to receive the “excrement”. Dalí thinks that it is of terrible bad taste ...

I’m slightly late with this, but I was happy to see that Opera have launched their first Web Standards Curriculum for teaching best practice in client-side development. With developers in the Netherlands setting up what could well be the world’s first front-end professional guild, and a full British Standard for accessibility in the works, the signs are promising that we’re entering into a new phase of professionalism in web development.

With less than three weeks to go, we are busy trying to finalize panels and speakers for our Mobilize conference, scheduled to be held on Sept. 18 in San Francisco at the Mission Bay Conference Center. (We have super-saver tickets on sale but not for long.) One of the highlights of the event is Mobilize LaunchPad. When we asked for submissions, we were simply deluged by the number of entrants, many of them tiny and ...
