Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS Perhaps "Sangria" was just a little too alcoholic for a teen-oriented device? Samsung's sliding QWERTY dumbphone for AT&T has been christened "Propel," it seems -- and we've now gotten the word from two independent sources, so we're feeling pretty good about it. Until AT&T changes its mind, anyway. The phone looks halfway decent, appears to support AT&T Navigation, and at the $80 we're hearing AT&T will ...

Filed under: Handsets, UTStarcom, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS Well, that mystery didn't take very long to solve. Remember that UTStarcom / PCD-sourced Knick that was getting shown around at some Radio Shack shindig not long ago? It's still very real and very much on the launch docket for AT&T -- but it's now the carrier-branded "Quickfire". Of course, PCD has never been a company to slap its own name on a handset being offered ...

Sure it’s not like back in the early 2000s, when those crooks from Enron were driving the prices of bandwidth down into the ground, but even today prices on Internet bandwidth continue to fall. If you are a consumer, however, there’s a good chance you’re wondering what I’m talking about — after all, broadband service providers like Comcast and Time Warner are talking about putting the meter on the bandwidth they serve up to residential ...

A few weeks ago we wrote about ways to get cheap wireless broadband, including an ingenious tip from Pocketables on how to use AT&T’s prepaid GoPhone service to get unlimited access for $20 a month. Well, Phone News tells us that option will be cut off as of Nov. 12th, which is a damn shame. They offer up a few alternatives, but those appear to involve way more work.

Of those people that purchased the new Apple 3G iPhone this summer, some 30 percent of them defected to AT&T from other networks, according to a report out today from analysis firm The NPD Group. With about 23 percent of people switching carriers between June and August, that’s a lot of churn, but since two-thirds of the AT&T iPhone newcomers came from Verizon (47 percent) or Sprint (19 percent), both of whom have good 3G ...

Filed under: Apple Corporate, iPhoneNorthern California District Judge James Ware rejected arguments for dismissal in a class-action case surrounding Apple and AT&T's exclusivity deal for the iPhone. The lawsuit alleges Apple unfairly maintains exclusivity with AT&T, preventing owners from unlocking and jailbreaking their handsets. It also argues that both companies disguised some post-sale costs of ownership. Ware dismissed Apple's and AT&T's requests for dismissal -- a normal, routine part of the lawsuit process -- ruling ...

Shockingly, AT&T has discovered that *gasp* people are abusing their unlimited pre-paid data service by tapping into it with their laptops. As a result, the plug is being pulled on the $19.99/month option starting on November 12th. AT&T will also place a cap on the legitimate laptop DataConnect plan that works out to 5GB a month for $60. Overages will be billed at $0.00048 per kilobyte, which translates into a bank account-busting $480 per gigabyte. ...

Whether people were holding out for 3G, the $199 pricepoint or just for their damn contracts to run out, in a market where carriers are pretty much forced to steal customers from each other, the iPhone 3G has been a Batman-worthy thief. One out of three iPhone 3G buyers jumped from other carriers to AT&T, though it might surprise where they came from. Even though Sprint is the only major carrier actually bleeding out subscribers ...

Still, some good shots and a lot of info, including new stuff on media syncing, touch typing, and more, for those waiting for the touchscreen wonder. [BGR]

It looks like RIM is saying, “Hey, don’t look at us! AT&T is still conducting testing!” Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore. The device was announced in May for a summer sale, and as of yet there are no official announcements from AT&T, the U.S. carrier for the Bold. It’s understandable that they would want to test the device for performance and avoid initial problems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM ...
