Findlay, OH. (Aug. 28) - Baseball fan and Findlay resident Matt Garces, according to friends and family, desperately wants the New York Yankees to qualify for the playoffs, hoping beyond hope that the storied franchise can make up a seven-game deficit in the season's final weeks. The reason? So Garces can see the Yankees "go down" in the post-season."The Yankees haven't missed the playoffs since 1994," Garces told his brother, Mark, the other day at dinner. ...

When Barack Obama was asked if he preferred the White Sox or Cubs, our future President declared,"Oh that's easy, White Sox. I'm not one of those fair weather fans. The Cubs, they're nice, you go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, the beautiful people out there, people aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox; that's baseball."

Jericho Scott throws a 40mph fastball. Okay, not that fast. But too fast for a nine-year old, apparently. That's why he's been banned from playing little league.

Nine-year-old Jericho Scott has been banned from pitching in a New Haven, Conn., youth baseball league because he throws so hard that he frightens the other players, according to league officials. But he took to the mound on Saturday anyway, so the other team simply dropped their bats and left the field, refusing to face him (San Diego Padres: "You can do that?"). Next logical step for all involved? Lawsuits! See, this is why I ...

"For the past month, ESPN.com’s Major League Baseball standings have included postseason probabilities, broken down by chance of winning the division and winning a wild card. It’s a brave step forward for standings, longtime fixtures of newspaper agate and more-recent staples of online sports sites. And ESPN isn’t yet sure playoff probabilities, as supplied by an online standings provider called Coolstandings, are for the long term."

The New Haven Youth Baseball League had a problem: nine-year-old Jericho Scott was too good of a pitcher for the other kids. Their solution? Ban him from pitching. And when his coach sent him to the mound anyway, the league decided to disband his team. Parents protested, demanding that they let the little the junior Kelly Leak play, and as the AP reports, the whole thing has turned into a giant, litigious mess. Parents of ...

This was a Pozterisk in my upcoming pitchers post. But the thing got too darned long. So you get it as a separate post … There is really only one thing that drives me insane about color commentators on television. It isn’t when the announcers say silly things because we all say silly things, especially when forced to talk non-stop for about three hours. It isn’t when they get stuff wrong because we all make ...

Not even instant replay could help this team As if baseball isn’t slow enough already, it now looks like the MLB will allow the use of instant replay to help make on-the-field calls. Don’t tell the purists. The deal, which is all but done but not *quite* finished, is such that instant replay will start being used before the end of the month. Use of instant replay will be limited to boundary calls—foul or fair ...

Dallas Buck is a perfect example of how college coaches abuse their charges in order to win. He helped Oregon State to a College World Series crown in 2006 as head coach Pat Casey kept sending him out to the mound despite knowing he was hurt. But Buck is a gutsy kid. The right-hander kept taking the ball and never complained. Now, the folks in Cincinnati will benefit from that "win at all costs" attitude. ...
