Genetic Future points out the minuses of a commercial gene test offering, which promises to tell parents whether their kids have alpha-actinin-3 gene combinations that are well-suited to Olympic sprinting. Since Dan is an expert on this gene, he can say with some authority that the test isn't adding much value for parents who want to make their sub-8-year-olds into the next Usain Bolt. Plus, for a few dollars more the 23andMe test (and for ...

cybergenesis2008 points us to a summary of research out of Harvard Medical School in which a set of genes known to affect aging in yeast was found to affect aging in mice as well. The genes, called sirtuins, perform two particular tasks; regulating which genes are "on" and "off," and also helping to repair damaged DNA. As an organism ages, the frequency of damage to DNA increases, leaving less time for the sirtuins' regulatory tasks. ...

Huh, they found the mechanism for resveratrol (the stuff in grapes/wine that has been linked to longer life). And it's plausible. This is very interesting...

What do you get when you combine thin sheets of gold leaf and a protein found in spinach? You get an artificial leaf that can photosynthesise energy from sunlight. It’s not a highly efficient conversion rate yet - way behind the top-of-the-range silicon photovoltaics - but the simplicity of the design means it could become a much cheaper alternative. somanyrobots writes with an interesting followup in the New York Times to the earlier-reported substantial reconstruction of the woolly mammoth genome: "Scientists are talking for the first time about the old idea of resurrecting extinct species as if this staple of science fiction is a realistic possibility, saying that a living mammoth could perhaps be regenerated for as little as $10 million. The same technology could be applied to any other extinct species from which ...

MagnetDroid writes "Michael Zuber and his colleagues from SUNY Upstate Medical University have shown how to regrow frogs eyes using stem cells. Zuber's team genetically engineered the stem cells to express transcription factors that regulate eye development and, when they transplanted them into frog embryos that had had one eye removed, they regrew into fully functioning tadpole eyes. Unfortunately, the same trick doesn't work in mammals but Zuber hopes to find chemicals that activate the ...
