With the surmised official launching of Facebook Connect, it’s evident that Facebook will very well become the center of activity and attention for a good portion of the social web. But why limit this social hub to other online networks? A new application called AddressBookSync lets you match Facebook user photos and birthdays with your Mac OS X address book and your iPhone, simplifying your offline life just a little bit. AddressBookSync does his by ...

The Canadian tourism board wants you to know that this year is the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables. They’ve been emphasizing this important data point all year long, hoping that it will pan out in tourism dollars. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and take a peek. So you see, yes, Carrots herself is alive and well, and inspiring consumer spending in a time of economic woe, to boot. ...

There have been some amazing, edible creations that we’ve posted on this site, but this one takes the cake. Hannah couldn’t make up her mind as to the cake she wanted for her fourth birthday, so her parents played through Super Mario Galaxy with her to make the Galaxy cake all the more convincing. Several concept designs later, this beauty was ready to be cut up and eaten. And just when you thought the cake ...

Ricardo Montalban turns 88 today. The star of many geeky movies, GeekDads will of course know him from his one appearance in Star Trek: TOS as Khan Noonien Singh. He reprised that role in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, arguably the best Star Trek movie. But Montalban has many other credits. Now wheelchair-bound due to an old spinal injury, he continues to work, including a recent stint as Senor Senior Sr. on Kim ...

Yesterday we had a little party for my son. He turned two this week, and while he doesn't use a lot of words, he THOROUGHLY enjoys singing along to a variety of songs. One song he particularly enjoys is "Old MacDonald". He loves mimicking the animal sounds and the simple "E-I-E-I-O" refrain. Consequently, we decided to go with a barnyard/farm theme for his party. While I have no problems eating meat, I prefer to think of ...

For a ten-year-old, Gordon Freeman has some pretty sharp facial hair. Yes, ten years ago this very day, those idiots at Black Mesa opened a pesky interdimensional rift and let all kinds of horrible beasties spill out into our universe. The big dopes. Valve are celebrating Half Life's tenth anniversary by selling the game on Steam for just 98 cents (1998! Do you see what they did there?) until 12:01 pm PST on November 21. ...

You go Mickey. When I’m your age, I want to look as young as you do today. These last 80 years have been quite transformative for you. You’ve gone from a sweet and unpretentious little rascal to a modern day role model for the young. The next 80 are sure to be as transformative, especially as more images of you begin to enter the public domain. Sure there will be fights, huge ones, for control ...

In a post about Comcast: "I bought EyeTV devices for three of my computers so I could receive digital over-the-air broadcasts. It amazes people when they find out that such high quality transmissions are available for free over the public air waves." I got a couple of questions wondering what I was talking about, and I promised to write about it here. So here goes. A few years back a friend told me he had ...

It actually amazes me that people don't seem to realize that broadcast TV even exists, just like radio. Free, wireless streaming audio and video without a network connection might make more sense to them. Stuff like MediaFLO and DVB is actually the same, too -- occasionally the apps that play it will use network connections to check subscriptions, but it's still broadcast media.
