Black Friday horror stories are inevitable, but nothing can compare to the trampling death of a 34 year old Walmart employee. But who is really to blame? Let us know—and feel free to vent. Oh, and to make matters worse, the police investigation of the surveillance tape is not turning up any leads—so the people involved in the incident will most likely get away scott free. Who is Most to Blame for the Walmart Trampling ...

While Black Friday revenues were up from last year, retailers are just getting a quick high. The crash starts tomorrow. On the one hand, shoppers took advantage of new and expanded deals and doorbusters and bought on average of 7% more. On the other, for many it marked the end of their holiday shopping, rather than the beginning. In addition, the discounts were so steep, and stacked on already marked-down prices, it seems likely that ...

I am somewhat surprised, and not surprised at the same time, at the way people act during these sales. Amazing.

Just between you and me, I know this comic isn’t actually going up on Friday. One could say it was closer to the subsequent Sunday and one would be totally correct. One could also say that I’ve spent the last 3 days in a gravy and stuffing induced hybernation which would also be intensely accurate. I had a comic planned for Black Friday some weeks ago that involved a zombie movie-esque scene where retail workers ...

By Andrea DicksonI think that the iPhone is a neato gadget. I couldn't believe that people stood in line for them. The final Star Wars movie was decent - I waited for the DVD. Some people camped outside the damn theater. There are very few things that are important enough, to me, to stand in line to purchase. This is partly because I don't like people, and thus try to avoid milling among them for ...

Here’s some unhappy post-Thanksgiving news: Wal-Mart Store Employee Trampled to Death by Black Friday Shoppers. It’s a grim story. Not only did frenzied shoppers trample an employee, but they just kept on stepping over his body once he fell. They pushed fellow employees who were trying to help him out of the way. And then they got angry when the store closed, in the wake of the poor man’s death. Do we need any more ...

While nothing can match the horror of workers getting killed by stupid mobs and shootings in the middle of a Toys R Us, we keep receiving horror tales about other Black Fridays gone wrong. The biggest one is about how CompUSA/Tigerdirect online "sale"—the one with the Sony Vaio TT with a $5,000 discount was apparently a total disaster, according to readers. Update: A guy from the CompUSA "sale" wrote to us. Readers keep posting their ...

How crazy are people on Black Friday? Are the deals so good that they would trample someone to death? Here’s a tragic Wal-Mart stampede that left one worker dead and got several people (including a pregnant woman) injured: The Black Friday stampede plunged the Valley Stream outlet into chaos, knocking several employees to the ground and sending others scurrying atop vending machines to avoid the horde. [...] "He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Wal-Mart ...

It wasn’t a banner day for Consumerism. Black Friday — the retail kickoff of the holiday season — is always a bit of a nuthouse. Marketers spend months devising ways to get you in front of a cashier, and early morning “doorbuster” specials have become an after-Thanksgiving tradition. All it takes is an advertising budget and a few loss leader markdowns to get shoppers queued up before dawn. Or, in the case one Long Island ...

I haven’t read a story that makes me this angry for quite some time. This is what sociologists talk about when people lose every vestige of who they are for the sake of consumerism and the need to put things above all else. As evolved as we think we are, this is what we’re capable of in our absolute, whitewashed mindlessness. At least the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, as despicable as they are, are thought ...

So yes, today is Black Friday, the day when big stores roll out big, one-day-only bargains in the hopes of setting a high sales bar for the all-important Holiday Season (Christmas! And, to a much lesser extent, Chanukkah!) Good savings are especially urgent this year, with the economy in the crapper and everyone needing to buy things for as cheap as possible (just short of not buying it at all. That would be ludicrous!) Every ...
