Beauty of Soul: Oscar Wilde & Anton Chekhov (2)
on
Stephen Fry (3) permalink
Everything we know about people is wrong. Well, perhaps that’s going a little far. But, really. Take Oscar. Oscar Wilde. He stands for one thing and one thing only. Wit. Sharp wit. Glittering wit. Keen, wicked, penetrating wit. Camp. Clever. Crushing. Proud, peacocky and impertinent. Recording Oscar Wilde and Anton Chekhov. © Samfry Ltd 2008 Wrong. Wrong, wronger, wrongest. Certainly Wilde was witty, certainly he is remembered for firing off epigrams like a belt-fed mortar. ...Shared by danliebke (2) scottknitter (3)Contribute comment - 24-7 kurzfilme - 24-7 prayer international, 24-7shorts.com (1)

Don’t Mind Your Language… (44)

Language. Language, language, language. In the end it all comes down to language. I write to you today on this subject as a way of welcoming you to www.stephenfry.com 2.0 and because, well, it’s a subject worth thinking about at any time and because fewer things interest me quite so much. There are so many questions and issues jostling, tumbling and colliding in my mind that I can barely list them.Is language the father of ...Shared by Candice (1) carl morris (0) Chad Orzel (0) Chris Fleming (0) Cole Cooper (0) danliebke (2) dataphage (0) David Smith (0) Evert (0) Fredrik Wennberg (0) Fuzzyman (0) Grant Fitzgerald (0) Greg (4) Groobers (0) Ikram (1) Ilse (2) James Forbes Keir (0) John (2) Katanma (2) Language (0) Lisa Stevens (0) Lloyd (0) Luka Marinko (1) Matthew Kimberley (0) melcorind (0) Michael Nielsen (1) Mitch (0) morland (0) Peter Nõu (6) schani (0) Scimon (0) scottknitter (3) Simon (0) Simonlittle (0) Srivatsn (0) StickyKeys (0) Tim Goh (0) tom (0) tomwsmf (5) Tony Yet (0) Vasudha Pande (0) Vidar Larsen (1) VJESCI (0) Zog (1)Explore read seven notes- Peter Nõu said: wow! hoppas Putte - Språktidningen - hittar hit... /p
- Zog said: Stephen Fry is a role model of mine in that he seems to take such pure and thorough joy in his liberal artistry, in being a true Renaissance Man.For those who haven't read him before, I hope you'll give this rather daunting homily a chance. I find it accessible only because I hear his musical voice reading it to me in my head. The sheer length of his paragraphs is justified to me only by the engaging vivace tempo of his recitation. As for his purpose, I couldn't agree more in all its fullness. Foremost, language is *fun*. Why do we think it pretentious? And why not celebrate it, even if it means starting a sentence with a conjunction? Or fragmenting a sentence, for that matter. In a choice of grammar versus joy, rules versus soul, the former be damned. When I share this with my wife, she's either going to agree with me wholeheartedly, or smack me over the head with her masters degree in composition and rhetoric. :)

- Srivatsn said: A beautiful essay by Stephen Fry on the pleasure of language. While he attacks the snottiness and pedantry associated with linguists, there is a lack of a holier-than-thou attitude and a refreshing honesty in how he accepts that he's prone to bouts of pedantry as well. Although I'd like to be as enlightened, I think petty snobbishness and arrogant self-importance does get in my way more often than it should.

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, I’m acutely aware that I owe you a podgram and a new blessay. It’s been weeks and possibly months since I last offered you anything. The thing is, I’ve just returned from America, having finished an epic documentary series on every single state. Having arrived back in Britain, I have hit the ground running and have spent the past eight weeks writing a book on the series plus I’ve ...Shared by Ole (0)Contribute comment -

Hello there. Firstly may I thank all of you who have downloaded and listened to my first podgram. Since it was little more than an incoherent stream of reminiscence poured into a microphone by a man with no functioning right arm with which to type, the piece was not available to be read as a text blog. From now on, however, always assuming I am careful enough not to incapacitate other useful parts of my ...Shared by Tony (0)Contribute comment
