The iPhone has never seemed a likely contender as a smart phone for the blind (it's certainly not designed for touch typing), which makes this case by designer Bruno Fosi all the more impressive. The Silicone Touch covers the phone's screen and features a selection of bas-relief buttons that correspond to menu items in a custom app, allowing those with diminished sight access to all the phone's functions, including multi-touch and finger flick scrolling. Right ...

The screen-based controls and rich visuals that make a device like the iPhone an attractive option for deaf users aren't of much use to the visually impaired. By employing a combination of an embossed "Moon Type" alphabet casing, a custom home screen and a screenreading app, the InVision solution could (awkardly) provide most of the core functions of the iPhone, including almost bearable browsing, text input and music navigation, to the blind. Feel-good sentiment aside, ...

Bloggers can now add text-to-speech capabilities to their site with new tools such as Odiogo, allowing readers to actually listen to blog posts on the website, and even on iTunes (as well as iPods and iPhones) as a podcast. While this is a cool feature for readers, it could be a very valuable tool for the visually impaired. These tools also provide benefits to readers with learning disabilities like Dyslexia. As a demonstration of how ...

I love Odiogo - the voice is still a little mechanical, but its close to the highest quality currently available. I've used it to podcast my fiction (the Odiogo feed is here: http://tinyurl.com/52stories ) and it think its a great tool.

I remember the blind guy (Al Pacino) in “Scent of a Woman” keeps his bills folded so that he can distinguish which is which. I think this can be done automatically by an ATM. Or has it been already introduced somewhere? Fold bills button for an ATM This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.

Imagine browsing the internet with your monitor off. After imagining it - try it. It's incredibly difficult if not impossible. This is an obstacle that affects tens of millions of blind people everyday, but will hopefully be a problem of the past soon.Beginning in 2006, Target, Inc. has been involved in a class action lawsuit with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and other plaintiffs, claiming that Target's website does not meet the minimal ...

Utah's Department of Health has a new anti-smoking campaign courtesy of Crowell Advertising that targets boys 12 and under. To appeal to these pre-teens, Crowell created a superhero called Smokerman. A pack-a-day kinda guy, Smokerman is "the one who can't." In the five low-budget but fairly amusing spots, Smokerman fails to save the world again and again due to his unfortunate habit. The press release says the goal is to appeal to kids without spouting ...

By Rob Einaudi Editor-in-Chief For Veterans Day I took the Challenger out for for a little family jaunt around Bainbridge Island. Man, the ferry ain't cheap—$18 to get there and $11 to get back. And I think Bainbridge Island drivers are even slower than Seattle drivers. First of all, you can't go anywhere in the Challenger without being mobbed. In the ferry line. On the ferry. Off the ferry. Mopar guys. Regular guys. People who ...
