A blogger just contacted me quite upset about the reaction to a blog post they’d written. They wanted my advice on what they should do. “Should you do anything?” “Well, I thought I should respond, but I don’t know what to do!” “Did you want a response to your blog post?” “Sure, but not this response.” “You wanted a response. You got one. What about that response aren’t you happy with?” When we put our ...

One of the reasons I was keen to move to WordPress is that it offers so many more practical ways to encourage blog comments, support lively conversations and build a community around your blog. I’ve jotted down some of the things I’ve added to Confident Writing - partly to let you know what you’ll find when you pop over and comment but also in the interests of sharing and learning from what you do. Some ...

We have already seen enough competition (I think) between services intended to help blog readers easier authenticate themselves to leave a comment on a blog and have all the comments from blogs supporting this or that service aggregated into one account: Disqus, SezWho, JS-Kit, IntenseDebate all work in the same field with slight variations of approaches. But unfortunately as blog owners choose different services to install on their blogs, readers end up creating accounts with ...

Testing out the new reblogging feature in Disqus. thats right now you can take any comment that is using disqus and turn it into your very own blog post or part of a blog post. Will be interesting to play around with this feature. What do you think? Comments Can Be Blog Posts We think so too. A lot of great conversation goes on in comments that shouldn’t be stuck behind the fold. Publishing these ...

The Liz Strauss Comment Counter by Ozh WordPress Plugin has been released by PlanetOzh and it is stirring up comment controversy everywhere. Recently, John C. Dvorak of PCMag asked what’s the value of online comments, bringing up an issue that confronts many bloggers as they mature in the blogging world. At first, comments were greeted with fear. Fear of how to control them, whether they were worth the risk of opening yourself up to feedack. ...

My fellow bloggers/FriendFeeders, here's yet another permutation of the subject of blog comments and online comments in general. Also note the link in this post to a related Dvorak column.

Excellent post about the value of comments on a blog - personally I enjoy to hear what my readers think and encourage them to comment. I use this chicklet to show that people *do* comment on my blog :)

Disqus is getting a whole lot more attractive to publishers today with the rollout of several new features designed to make the third-party commenting system function much more like one native to popular blogging platforms. While Disqus has attracted more than 30,000 websites to its system, its biggest drawback to-date has been the fact that its commenting system functioned essentially like a widget, meaning comments were not stored locally. This meant that publishers who installed ...

After prodding from a friend and business partner, I finally added Entrecard to this blog. It was a good move. My traffic increased significantly, I have new readers, great comments on my posts, and in return I have discovered new (to me) blogs I really enjoy reading. It’s simple enough to join. You have to create a 125×125 button, but they have templates available so that shouldn’t stop anyone. Tip: Read the Entrecard Ebook For ...

Encouraging your supporters to get out and support you through social media, including blog comments, seems like fair game, but US presidential candidate Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is taking a step further and perhaps a step too far, according to some observers. McCain’s web site has an area under the header Spread the Word in which the campaign encourages visitors to “spread the word about John McCain on news and blog sites” by leaving comments ...

That's the question that will be debated tonight at 10:30 pm on the second season opener of Comedy Central's Root of All Evil. Arguing that ultimate fighting is worse is Andy Daly, while Patton Oswalt argues that blogs and the people who comment on them (cough) are the true evil in this world. You know, even though I blog ...

I have read a post by Fred Wilson on his blog initiating a new discussion about what Techmeme sources should be and why Techmeme should include blog comments into account instead of focusing on blog posts (and articles on mainstream media websites) only. Fred not only encourages Gabe Rivera to include comments in the sources but he actually puts the question as "When Will A Comment Be Treated Like A Post On Techmeme?". So it's ...

Refill the coffee, Thelma. This post is long and impassioned. It might even be worth a read I’ve been impressed enough with Disqus to give it a go. I’m ok with it, but it’s not there yet. I have realised that my frustrations with its failure to import old comment threads from Wordpress are warranted, but I can see the utter nightmare it would be to try and write and import to do that. Meanwhile, ...

Filed under: Developer, Utilities, Blogging, Social SoftwareBack before the days of FriendFeed, it was pretty common to see people post things like, "Just wrote a new blog post. What do you think?" to Twitter. That's a good way of getting your link out there, but if anybody actually wanted to answer your question, they'd probably do it in the comments, not in Twitter. Chirrup is a way of tweeting back at someone and commenting at ...

I really didn’t want to do this but I guess it’s time. I love getting comments here but there a few things that really irritate me (maybe I’m just getting grouchy in my old age). Comment spam and and keyword spamming the name field in comments just happen to be two of those things. To add insult to injury, I just learned that people are actually being paid to stuff keywords in the name field ...
