Looks like gmail has allured microsoft’s finest designers to create their new sign in page. What a disaster. Google would have been much more successful if they allowed people to actually customize their email as opposed to giving them 30 ass ugly themes to chose from and imposing the sign in mountains on everyone. I understand corporate America needs a means of escaping their office environment, but the road paved with hotmail aesthetics isn’t likely ...

I attended MIT’s Smart Customization Seminar last week and had the chance to spend the day with some of the brightest minds working in customization and open innovation. The day was filled with great presentations and I collected notes on the best. Zazzle Jeff Beaver, Zazzle co-founder, was there along with a few other Zazzler’s to talk about the launch of their new partnership with Keds. NIKEiD and other services allow you to pick the ...

It's odd how asking yourself the simple question "What would Bill Gates do?" can bring a clarity-inducing shift of perspective to seemingly intractable problems. I don't why it works, but it does. Depending on the problem you're facing, you can replace Bill Gates with Steve Jobs, or Warren Buffett, or the Pope. Here are some fictional examples:Q. What should you do with that troublesome employee who never seems to quite make the grade, no matter how ...

It would be great to solve problems like Bill Gates--if you were Bill Gates with all the ambition, savviness, and raw intellectual horsepower.

“Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because men are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except ...

Hank Williams busts out the brutal honesty: UI Guru Jakob Nielsen’s site is unreadable. And John Gruber concurs. Every time I end up there, I wonder idly why I’ve never gotten around to reading through what looks like great content. And after a few moments I close the window because the colors are so awful. And why doesn’t his 10 Best Application UIs of 2008 awards announcement actually link to the winner’s sites? Seven of ...

As good as Apple is for creating buzz around their new products, and really breaking the mold when it comes to industrial design, they have to figure out a way to make people feel less stupid for having their old products. Yesterday morning I thought my MacBook Pro was pretty sweet. Now it just looks stupid. So does my old iPod. Great marketing of course, to get me out to the Apple Store and spend ...
