The overwhelming majority of laptop searches at the border turn up no evidence of crime, according data presented by Deputy Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, Jayson P. Ahern. At a panel discussion on October 20, Ahern revealed that of the 169 laptops searched at the border in August 2008, only two were seized – a mere 1.4% “hit rate.” Another 10 computers were “detained” for further analysis, such as language translation and decryption, to ...

This concept from Mac Funamizu is designed to show how truly badass a phone with an OLED-wrap display could look. The most important advance? No more bezels or borders of any kind. A concept like this makes even the iPhone look cluttered, with that primitive silver border. It's a great little design, inspired by the Nokia Aeon concept, and we'd love to see the wrap-around screen idea on a real phone someday. [Boing Boing Gadgets]

TUAW points us to the news that Open Office 3.0 native for Intel Macs is live. If you are tired of (paying for) Microsoft Office and not ready to make the move to Google Docs, Open Office is a nice, free altrnative. It is also much faster than the Java-based (but loved) Neo-Office (based on the same codebase). Download (note: the site is up and down due to unprecedented demand - their words, not ours)

On my web page, I have posted an open letter to my friends on the left that attempts to persuade them that the current financial mess is not the product of free markets but a whole variety of government intervention. I further attempt to persuade them that, for reasons they might share, solutions that bailout the lenders and ask for more regulations will be counter-productive. I hope this letter also serves as a kind of ...

Veteran hip-hop writers Andrew Emery (Hip Hop Connection, Fat Lace) and Chairman Mao (ego trip, XXL Mag) have both penned intelligent articles which take a far more open-minded approach to all the the trendy tight-jeans rappers than my own five-minute, hateful rant against the smedium shirt brigade. I’ve also notices that Wikipedia now also mentions “old-school hip-hop website Unkut and Jersey City rapper Mazzi” as leading the Hipster Rap backlash or some shit. Even the ...
