Nick Denton, publisher of Gawker Media, has backed up his recent dire forecast of a potential 40-percent decline in advertising with a set of “doom-mongering” charts and graphs. His focus, naturally, is on Internet advertising — and he took his premonition to heart yesterday by consolidating two of his sites and putting a third up for sale. But if Denton is anywhere close to right, the most significant consequence will the be the death of ...

Teachers are the key. To be more precise, highly effective teachers are the key. Putting high quality educators in every classroom would increase student performance more than any other reform movements. This isn’t just my opinion, it’s also the opinion of Professor Edward L. Glaeser according to his op-ed in the Boston Globe. Dr. Glaeser proposes that step one to getting high quality teachers into the classroom is getting highly capable people into teaching. He ...

Posted by Justin Uberti, Software EngineerI'm a big user of Gmail chat. Being able to switch from email to chat as needed, all within the same app, is really great for productivity. But people can only type so fast, and even with our new emoticons, there are still some things that just can't be expressed in a chat message. That's why today we're launching voice and video chat -- right inside Gmail. We've tried to ...

Google really isn't letting off of their Gmail development. This is big, and awesome. Wonder how long it will be until the video is saved in the "Conversation" view just like chats, or passed through Google's fancy text-to-speech software [http://bit.ly/sbcR].

A couple of days ago, the Boston Globe published a truly remarkable selection of photographs from the Barack Obama campaign trail. Click here to see them all. While Obama was not everyone's choice, these images clearly reflect the humanity of the candidate, while also conveying the magnitude of the political sea change in a most artful way.Daniel Turman

Our favorite section of the Boston Globe is no more. It was called “Sidekick”, and it featured local news and events in our corner of the metro: the one called “Northwest”. It had local restaurant reviews, club, theater, school and museum notices, plus other graces that made the paper especially relevant to our family. Well, now the paper has “improved” itself cosmetically while diminishing itself substantially. Sidekick is gone. In its place is “G”, a ...

How to Fight a Rumor Boston Globe on why rumors persist and how to stop them. I found it very interesting why some people like to spread rumors, whether their false or not: Aside from their use as a news grapevine, rumors serve a second purpose as well, researchers have found: People spread them to shore up their social networks, and boost their own importance within them. To the extent people do have an agenda ...
