Microblogging platforms like Twitter, Plurk, and FriendFeed are amongst the newest darlings in social media;their popularity based largely on the immediacy of their message. As with any social media platform that grows in popularity, Internet marketers are eager to figure out how to leverage microblogging platforms in their social media campaigns. Questions about monetization, the stability of the platforms, and tracking efforts have been fodder on marketing blogs since their inception. The one way you ...

This is part of an ongoing series about government 2.0 written by Dr. Mark Drapeau. To view previous posts in the series click here. I’m a member of Generation X, and it seems to me that when I was young the character of Uncle Sam was still used on television, radio, and in common conversation. What’s our brand now? Sam’s getting a little old, invented in the early 1800’s as he was – What’s Sam ...

HP has decided to join the glossy button bandwagon, and now the logo almost looks like a SUPERHERO!! (I don’t mean that in a good way though) They have decided to move away from the rounded rectangle and go with a circle. The HP now has a “fancy” bevel to it as well. For some reason i also see the word NO in the new logo now. Overall I don’t think this is an improvement ...

It all started with a flash of American superiority and a bruised royal ego. In 1851, a yacht owned by the New York Yacht Club easily beat 15 of the fastest British yachts in a race around the Isle of Wight. Surprised at the result, Queen Victoria was reported to have asked who had come second and was politely informed: 'There is no second, your Majesty.' The America's Cup had begun. After 156 years and ...

Yesterday, NikePlus put together a pretty spectacular international event. The Human Race. It's reportedly the largest race in history, and inspired more people to run a 10K race together than ever before. Here's why this was an awesome brand event:+ Nike has influenced thousands - maybe hundreds of thousands of runners to run a race for the first time. That's something that many beginners never achieve. Runners will always remember their first race, and now these ...

Earlier this week I received a LinkedIn question from Jay Ehret, wondering whether I knew of any good, free eBooks on marketing. Unfortunately, most of the eBooks that I knew of were not free. But then, yesterday, Andrea Vascellari, sent a message on Twitter advising on the availability of a free marketing strategy eBook. From a quick scan, "Strategic Communications Planning" by Dave Fleet is a great introduction to the steps required to develop a ...

So, The Do Lectures are coming closer (next week) and my list of essentials is pretty much ticked off. I felt VERY out of my depth purchasing a sleeping bag as requested by howies, but it seems like a good one and is very comfortable with some great features (funny that, techy features). It gets better and better though - one of the blogs I read is Church of the Customer - all about customer ...

An interesting post flowed through my Google Alerts email this morning from Digital Response Media. The post was entitled: Social media ‘ideal for branding.’ The point of the post was to explain how the digital marketing manager of British Airways, Chris Davies, uses social media to raise the profile of his brand online. Basically, he finds extreme value in user generated content on the web. There was an interesting quote in the piece from Mr. ...

Over the past week or so there have been a series of ideas coming together in my mind. I had been struggling to pull them together into a coherent framework until I saw this post by Peter Kim. He asks some difficult questions around the benefit of social media, but goes further -- suggesting that social media does not scale: One-ninth of the WORLD's population watched the 2006 FIFA World Cup final. Social media vs. ...

While it's not quite Trackur, have you played with BackType yet? I'm not usually one to hype things immediately after launch, but I've been playing with BackType over the past 24 hours and I have to say I'm liking it in a big way. If you missed yesterday's TechMeme crazy, BackType is a cool new blog comment aggregation service that grabs what commenters are saying from across the Interwebz and places them into one keyword-focused, ...

Recently there’s been a heated exchange between RichardatDell and Amanda Chapel on Twitter regarding the lines between personal and professional when representing a company in the social media space. Without getting into the, ahem, personality conflicts between them and taking sides, I do think it’s an interesting and relevant subject to explore. Where is the line between a “community evangelist’s” personal opinions and the company they represent? Does it matter in our new digitally connected ...

We’ve written before about the importance of building a personal brand for independent web workers, and others have pronounced it a “prerequisite for career success.” If you’re a believer in this idea, and you have a Twitter account, there’s an easy way to help define and promote your own brand: use your Twitter page background. I picked up on this idea from @Pistachio, though it’s been going around. The screenshot is from my own Twitter ...

Not too long ago Management Consulting News asked my opinion on business strategy and the consulting industry. Maybe you will share my opinions. Maybe you won't.So much has been written about business strategy that it’s hard to sort through—what is your definition of strategy? There’s no end to the jargon-rich writing on business strategy, so I like to keep my definition simple. Your strategy describes what makes your business unique, and what is the best way ...
