Since joining Osmosoft, which is in orbit around a very large telco, I've been interested in the reasons why large enterprises don't integrate open source into their organisations as well as they could. After all, the benefits are well known now, and this is something that individuals can achieve with very little effort - so why not a collection of individuals?Turns out the main reason (besides culture!) is that large companies are often stuck in ...

With BT’s $105 million cash acquisition of Ribbit this week, there’s a large focus on the telecom industry and developer community, as this is a major milestone for both ends of the spectrum. Having already established itself with platform initiatives thanks to vast investment in its 21st Century Network (21CN), BT was quite focused on its growth potential as a more open global network, working closely with developers. As Ribbit also has a large focus ...

I’ve blogged about a couple of things before, when I’ve actually said wow and it has made me think, “man, I need that!”. Well today is another one of those days, and funnily enough, it is not npower who is doing this to me It is ‘Silicon Valley’s First Phone Company”, Ribbit, which has just been bought by our very own BT. Techcrunch have a good post here on the acquisition which has cost BT ...

BT (British Telecom) has acquired Silicon Valley-based Ribbit for roughly $105 million, according to various news outlets. Rumors of the deal first emerged on Venturebeat, though company officials vociferously denied any deal. Our sources say that the delays were mostly due to internal issues at Ribbit. Michael Boustridge, President, BT Americas said: “The Ribbit platform makes it simpler, cheaper and faster to build communications functionality into applications, enabling developers to introduce new revenue-generating voice services ...

在线程中暂停和恢复下载:session = ~/Download/session 为新的下载监视目录:schedule = watch_directory,10,10,load_start=~/Download/watch/*.torrent 在下载结束后移动文件:on_finished = move_complete,”execute=mv,-u,$d,get_base_path=,~/Download/ ;d.set_directory=~/Download/” 到达上传限额后停止上传:schedule = ratio,60,60,”stop_on_ratio=200,50M,300” 完整的选项和下载请看下面的网站:http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/ 2)另一个重要的BT下载工具Transmission也有命令行版本。

Small niche internet service providers and BT - and their customers - will be the early beneficiaries of the telecoms giant's announcement on Tuesday that it will spend £1.5bn to install new fibre-optic cables to reach the streets, and in a small number of cases the walls, of 10m homes. The new systems, to be installed over the next five years, should be capable of speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps), though ...

About 16 months ago, I heard Ed Richards of Ofcom speak at a CITI conference at Columbia, and blogged about it here. I remember thinking that Richards didn’t seem to think that highspeed access to the internet was all that important. The market had to demand it, and the market wasn’t being demanding. Also, he wasn’t interested in government intervention to support highspeed access. [In April 2007] Richards said (paraphrase mine): We won’t give network ...

Unless you’re using Enron math, BT’s new plan to connect 10 million homes — roughly 40 percent of the United Kingdom — with fiber networks at a cost of £1.5 billion doesn’t quite add up. At today’s conversion rate, that’s about $3 billion — or $300 to wire up each of these proposed 10 million homes. BT hopes this will help it stave off competition from rivals who have started to use their new backbones ...

I’m worried. Really worried. There has been some amazing news for the UK today - well done BT! BT today announced plans to spend £1.5bn building a super-fast broadband network across the UK over the next four years. The plan would connect 10m homes, around 40% of the UK, to a new fibre-optic based network and replace the copper wires that link most homes today. This could, rather will, completely transform people’s internet experience, and ...
