For all its efficiencies—or perhaps because of them—our modern economy is woefully impersonal. We rarely come to know the people behind our clothes and comestibles. Scott Ballum, a Brooklyn-based designer, took this state of affairs as a challenge. In March, he pledged to spend a year buying only the things he could trace back to a specific person, and he’s since begun chronicling the experience online, with what he calls the Consumer Reconnection Project.“The idea ...

For geography buffs and real estate sharks, a new frontier: Lunar real estate. In the interest of funding privatized exploration, settlement and development of the Moon,Lunar Registry is selling seemingly legit deeds to lunar property by the acre. While their mission statement to permanently inhabit the Moon by 2015 seems somewhat loony—or at least astronomically ambitious—shares of lunar land are copyrighted and deposited in the U.S. Library of Congress, the U.N. Depository Library, and international ...

Is it possible? Can this country's insatiable appetite for consumer goods be slowing down? No! Surely not! US News & World Report's Alpha Consumer, Kimberly Palmer took a look at consumer demand and its relationship to cheap credit. Only twice since 1965, despite half a dozen recessions, have Americans spent less in a year than the previous one. Indeed, it often seems that we have defined ourselves by our ability to buy supersized everything, from ...

It took me quite a bit of research via Adwords (advertisers buying ads) and Adsense (publisher tool to make money) to discover how to buy ads on YouTube. If you want to place an “Invideo” ad (one that sneaks up along the bottom) or other ads, you’ll need a lot of money. According to Google’s Adwords help, Direct YouTube advertising contracts for US advertisers targeting the US require the following cost commitments. You’ll need to ...

Windows/Mac OS X: Amazon Watcher isn't the first gadget that can monitor Amazon items for price drops and availability, but it is the rare tool that can automatically buy your rare gear for you. Once you add your account information (and assuming you have payment methods stored on that account), you're set to have Amazon Watcher buy x units of whatever you're hunting, but it can also pop up the order page or email you, ...

Interested in knowing what apps are being bought at the App Store? Well, lucky you, Medialets has estimates for your viewing pleasure. To determine demand, Medialets uses the number of ratings each app has and also takes into account the average rating of an app as well. So though it may not be the most accurate measurement, it’s still a fairly good barometer in determining app popularity. So what rules the App Store? FREE. According ...

CompUSA now has the Nokia N810 at $299. That's not bad for an 800x480 web browser with Flash, a Skype phone, an Email and chat device, a music and video player, and a GPS with a navigation upgrade. Nope. Not bad at all. I hope the international community gets some price-cut love soon too.Update: There's already a thread on InternetTabletTalk discussing this.

For first-time buyers, sinking home prices should be a good thing, making homes that once seemed out-of-reach more affordable. The trouble is: Potential home buyers face stricter standards and higher costs in securing a mortgage. According to an article in today’s WSJ, mortgage insurers have been dramatically tightening their standards throughout the U.S. (See “Mortgage Insurers Raise Bar“.) To diminish their exposure, mortgage insurers have been defining an increasing number of markets as declining (see ...

Americans throw away a quarter of our food uneaten, which translates into serious wasted cash over time. The Guardian compiled an excellent list of ways to shop smarter so you end up buying what you need, and eating what you buy. Make A List! Shopping lists top every saving strategy we offer, and for good reason. Lists make for routinized, disciplined shopping. Don't Fear An Empty Fridge: Food grows mold, not interest. An empty fridge ...

The idea of maps as more than simply direction-givers is taken to the extreme in this collection of abstract cartography. Featuring the projects of different designers (including the Center for Urban Pedagogy and Brooke Singer of Superfund365, both previously covered in these pages), the maps in the atlas range in subject from New York’s garbage-removal system to the secret CIA rendition flights. They may not help you navigate the roads, but they will help you ...
