Living in a small city like mine, it’s not often one gets to feel that one is at the cutting edge of an emerging future society. So how lucky for myself and the other residents of the over-stretched city of Portsmouth that we are the first town in the UK to be under the observation of Phildickian ’smart’ CCTV cameras that are programmed to flag up an alert when they observe ’suspicious behaviour’ that might ...

The Canon EOS 5D Mark II has shipped in Asia, and the videos are pouring in. Today we have a Korean adaptation of Reverie and some gorgeous Beijing streets at night, complete with perhaps my most vivid Beijing memory, constant spitting. Both of these movies allow Vimeo members to download the originals for closer inspection, which is worth doing as Vimeo tops out at 24 fps for HD. That means these 30 fps movies are getting ...

In English:The video mode on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is very exciting to filmmakers. It would be perfect with only two changes:an option for 24 frames per second, the frame rate of filmmanual control of shutter, aperture, and ISOI hope that you might be able to add these features in a firmware update to the 5D Mark II. If not, please consider them for your next video-enabled ...

If you have $2700 lying around, an hour or so to spare and a visceral need to do something, anything other than eat turkey and – gasp – talk to your family this weekend, you could pop to your local camera store and grab the hot new Canon 5D MkII. The camera is now shipping, body only or in kit form (Amazon has it bundled with the EF 24-105mm ƒ4 L IS USM Lens for ...

The latest in moe marketing gimmicks is moeficating the memory by providing moe characters to represent various memory products, each with an appealing design and even a backstory. How can you, on the same page, say both this (italics mine):...This sensor size difference means that for any given combination of aperture value, subject distance and angle of view, images from the EOS 5D Mark II are going to have much shallower depth of field than images from a conventional HD device... This difference in the look of movies created by the EOS 5D Mark II is part of the reason why we believe ...

Photoshop Disasters spotted this Escher-esque ad for some nameless Hong Kong cell phone. I am impressed: not only can it take color pictures in a monochromatic world, but it has a hell of a zoom out lens. Hong Kong: Amazing New Camera Phone [Photoshop Disasters]

A simple fix for a lack of a camera stabilizer: attach it to the self-stabilizing noggin of a chicken skull. It does not, of course, work if the noggin is no longer attached to the chicken. With his backyard chicken coop, our happy mutant overlord Mr. Frauenfelder should be able to do something fun with this for MAKE, you'd think. [via Gizmodo]

Nikon's just come up with news about what kind of deal you can get on some of its cameras on Black Friday. There's a $50 discount on the 10-megapixel Coolpix S550 (down to $150) and $100 off the 18x zoom P80, making it $300. But the D60 gets an even bigger chunk off with a $125 discount to $575. Sure there're a few conditions, like the D60 has to come in the DSLR kit with ...

This attractive lightweight neoprene camera case — more like a wallet, really — unfurls into a tiny miniature tripod and costs around £19.95. I like this a lot more than most bulky camera cases I've seen, even if the tripod functionality seems a little useless. Wrap-Up Tripod [Firebox via Geek Alerts]

Joel's thumbs were neither decisively up nor down, but rather pensively wrapped around a scotch SORRY, *BOURBON* tumbler. Here is an MP4 for your downloading pleasure. RED CEO Jim Jannard, who generally manages to construct all sentences using only intensifiers and superlatives, is getting really excited on the RedUser forums again: New announcement on Dec. 3rd. Everything has changed... just as we promised. :-) :-)? :-)? What do your cryptic smilies mean, Jim? He goes on to say that the new announcement will make November 13th seem 'insignificant', which is, let's be honest here, quite a claim to accompany such a ...

Last week, we told you about the home-made scanner camera featured at Make magazine. Three weeks ago, we kicked up a bit of controversy when we told you to throw away your old scanner. Today, we take our own advice and, with the help of a sharp knife and a roll of gaffer tape, turn an old Canonscan LiDE 50 into a working camera. First, the kit. We have an old, USB bus-powered scanner, three ...

There are some inventions that cause electronics manufacturers and consumers alike to wonder why they hadn't been invented before, and how anyone ever lived without them. And then there's this. Fantalog Interactive has devised a camera phone that takes pictures when you blow on it. Apparently following some kind of hilarious global realization that phones can be controlled with stale air, the Fantalog 'Emotion' blow-camera is not only inspiring because it's the first of its ...
