Kambiz's review (pointer) to the Humanity's Genes an the Human Condition conference made me aware of Jean-Laurent Casanova's research. His general idea seems to be that heightened susceptibility or death due to infectious disease is in large part a function of inter-individual genetic variation. Among the young this is due to Mendelian genes of large effect, whether it be dominant or recessive (higher frequency among those who are the product of cousin marriage). For the ...

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged the advantages of Mobile Safari's rendering engine during a developer's conference in Australia yesterday. When asked why they continue to use their own proprietary rendering engine when open-source ones keep up with new standards faster, he replied that the idea of using WebKit, Mobile Safari's open-source engine, was "interesting," and that they may consider using it for IE in the future.

I awoke this morning in Paris, to text messages from European, Canadian, and other friends, expressing their deep joy that Obama had been elected. This election was an international one, and we Americans have sent a strong message to the entire planet that we not only want change, but that we can and have taken back our country, and put it back on the road to true democracy. After months of hearing about friends in ...

As insignificant as 107,000 people living on just over 100 square miles in the Caribbean Sea may be, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has Obama’s back. In this week’s Searchlight Newspaper: PRIME MINISTER Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is endorsing Barack Obama for the President of the United States. “I will say this to our American brothers who are here. I don’t mind being undiplomatic and saying Ralph Gonsalves supports Barack Obama,” said Gonsalves on Wednesday at ...

Tomorrow night at 10PM, Food Network kicks off Alton Brown's latest TV show, Feasting on Waves, where the Mensa-smart kitchen geek and his crew hop into two 50-foot catamarans and sail around 15 different Caribbean islands in search of quality cuisine, shooting and editing the hi-def episodes right there on the boats. It turns out, despite his disdain for specialized kitchen gadgets, Brown is a certifiable gizmophile. He has owned maybe 20 Macs, most recently ...
