Here’s a Steampunk phone prototype by designer Arthur Schmitt. You make calls using binary punchcards. Punchcards! There are also some dials and a metal grill-type earpiece. The backside of the device seems to contain some sort of rolling counter that likely either keeps track of call duration or gives you the time. It looks much more rugged than the old-school Nokia phones that everyone used to get for free but I’m guessing you can’t play ...

If Android sputters out and fades away, Google might have another plan to shake up the phone industry. In a patent filed and 2007 and published this week, Google details plans for an "Instant Bid" system for dealing with wireless connections. The concept is pretty straightforward: devices broadcast their request for service, and available networks automatically return a list of price offers for that service. The system makes perfect sense for locations with competing Wi-Fi ...

Here is some bad news for iPhone 3G users - if your phone adapter looks like what you see in the picture above, it would be wise for you to stop using it immediately as it could be potentially hazardous. Apple has announced on Friday that the metal prongs on these plugs are weak enough to break off and remain stuck inside a power outlet, creating the risk of electric shock. These ultracompact USB power ...

Bookmark-syncing application Foxmarks has updated their site to support easy access to your bookmarks from your iPhone, iPod touch, or other mobile device. Last week we highlighted O-Marks, an native iPhone application that syncs bookmarks to your iPhone. O-Marks requires you to access those bookmarks outside your browser, though, which isn't ideal, and it seems like a bit of an overkill for something as simple as bookmarks. With the Foxmarks update, just point your mobile ...

This morning marked the launch of the first phone that runs Android, an open-source, Google-designed operating system that runs web-savvy applications on a touchscreen-based phone. We didn't have an agent at today's launch of T-Mobile's G1, but luckily our brothers-in-arms Gizmodo are all over it. We had some pretty high expectations for Android, and it seems to deliver on most of them, with a few caveats. Let's take a look at what Android can do, ...

Regulation of content on student-owned digital tools (whether hardware or online) by school authorities has been an ongoing debate for a while now (see for example this post or this article I wrote about a year and a half ago). Where do we draw the line? The issue has become even stickier when it comes to student-created content outside of school that has nothing to do with learning, but could be considered immoral, illegal, or ...

A lot of hopes and open-source dreams are riding on a plucky little phone platform called Android, and its public debut on a real-live phone happens Tuesday. Those of us at Lifehacker HQ who didn't spring for an iPhone, and even some who did, are eager to see how it performs and, more importantly, what kind of useful apps will soon appear for the open Android. That's not to say we (and many other bloggers) ...

Behold, the key to upgrading your class status! This vintage ad for an Imitation Cell Phone is by all accounts legitimate, and while funny, it's kind of true. The free Google Maps Mobile adds another update to the increasingly feature-rich mobile maps application, this time rolling out Street View and walking directions. The app recently added transit schedules, so the inclusion of walking directions make Google Maps Mobile a concrete jungle dweller's best friend. A Consumerist reader tried to trade in some old cellphones via Flipswap, and it did not go well. Actually, it pretty much didn't go at all—he may as well have dropped them off at a Goodwill. I've just updated my iPhone 3G with the just-released free upgrade to firmware 2.1 and while the interface looks the same, no cosmetic changes, there have definitely been some improvements in performance. Backing up the phone is much, much quicker, I have two additional bars of reception, and the battery life is supposedly much improved as well. That we'll have to see, but just the reception boost alone is enough to warrant doing the update. ...

This is the case for her - the new NuTouch "Crystal" case, which just as you'd think, is transparent. While I doubt it's going to give her enough protection from drops, it can withstand scratching, dust and minor bumps. If you can't bear to cover up your 3G ...
