At first it seemed that the rules behind the approval process for new apps for the iPhone App Store were pretty cut and dry. You know, they can't duplicate the functionality of the on-board apps like Mail and iPod, they can't use too much bandwidth and they can't cause a security hazard. That first rule is why apps like MailWrangler and Podcaster were given the boot; they were too close to those built-in apps. But ...

Our testing has confirmed that iPod Touch users do not get updates to their Google Maps app with firmware 2.2, which, at least on the iPhone, includes the addition of Street View as well as public transit and walking directions. The updated browser interface, podcast downloading and assorted other tweaks are all there, as was the requisite sacrificing of any jailbreak apps. Of course there may be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this, but until ...

Sagem Orga, in partnership with BlueSky is targeting the array of cellphones (and presumably mobile-internet enabled PCs and such) that currently don't have GPS with this new invention: a SIM card with AGPS aboard. Clever stuff indeed, packing all the chips for a "highly accurate GPS receiver", wiring and antenna into a thumbnail-sized space. We've got to wonder how good its satellite fixes will be with such a small device though, and since it looks ...

Eight years ago, when I got my first mobile phone and I had to pay RPG some 16 rupees a minute incoming and several lakhs per minute per SMS, I first draped my fingers around a Nokia 3310. Remember that model? Of course you do. Some of you probably still use it. If there was one mobile phone you never, EVER, kept using waiting for it to breakdown before a replacement it was the 3310 ...

That was fast. It's barely Nov. 21 and the iPhone 2.2 update is here, all 246MB of it, as promised. Included in the update, according to the release notes and as we'd heard, are all the new Google Maps features we've been waiting for like Street View (which is so far butter smooth and delicious over Wi-Fi, slightly less magical over 3G), public transit and walking directions, as well as over-the-air podcast downloads, mail enhancements, ...

I want to be the first to say that streeview on the phone is hot. But, it is not easily locatable. You can't do "hey, street view my current location" -- or i didn't find it yet.

Got it. Sweet. Street View on iPhone is a thing of beauty and utility...as long as you're on wifi. Still no cut and paste. Come ON. There's gotta be a multitouch movement for this.

Phones are meant to be pretty solid in their build, considering how often it is bandied about, and we believe that handsets ought to be able to withstand a couple of unintended drops to the floor without breaking or cracking. Well, the Glassy Glassy phone concept is otherwise, since it comes with double glass layers (hence its name), which also translates to having to carry around a tissue handy so that fingerprints can be wiped ...

This isn't the first cellphone concept to incorporate glass, but I'll be dammed if it isn't one of the prettiest. There aren't any details on functionality, but it is clear that designer Mac Funamizu's "Glassy Glassy" concept takes minimalist design about as far as it can go without ditching the physical phone altogether and implanting communication devices directly into our brain. Some companies, like Dell, are encouraging employees to take a day or two off—unpaid, natch—to help the company save money. Then there's Sprint. Oh, Sprint. Bleeding cash and customers way before the new great depression took root, its most recent quarter was spectacularly disastrous, so we're not surprised to hear that they asking employees to voluntarily resign by Dec. 3 in exchange for a compensation package to cut costs as deeply as possible. Says Sprint ...

I've long suspected that the best job ever would be to work in product stress testing—because you basically get paid to break shit all day. Nokia sent over a bunch of info detailing how their test centers operate, leaving me fully convinced this would indeed be my dream gig. Not only do they run over 200 mechanical tests on these things, but where else could you play with a bunch of machines that bend, bake, ...

YouTube has quietly started testing out real HD quality videos on a smattering of its content, a development that is getting attention from viewers in message boards and blog forums. The new format could be a big move for YouTube, as the video quality is over 80MB, which means that they are probably the same H.264 encoded mp4 files available in the iTunes store.
