Leviticus 11:40 says "If any animal you may eat has died, anyone who carries its carcass...shall wash his clothes." Just don't use Downy fabric softener; according to Wired, (but not online at time of this writing) a main ingredient is Dihydrogenated tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride, "a derivative of rendered fat from cattle, sheep and horses. Just boil it down and mix with ammonium. After a series of chemical pit stops, it comes out a quaternary ...

Electronic noses are nothing new, but it's always interesting when you throw space into the mix. NASA's most recent Endeavor mission has taken with it a third generation e-nose that's the size of a shoebox, where it will act as a detection and warning system for air contaminants. The ISS currently has no system and relies wholly on the astronauts' actual noses. Developed and built by AEMC, the new nose's dynamic range is from less ...

It is considered impolite at best to ask life sciences companies about their cost structure and pricing strategies. Life sciences executives can often appear naive, incognizant and uncaring about the basic economics of their industry. They appear to exclusively and superficially target profit maximization and wholly propriety IP development and protection; ironic given the greater goals of healthcare. Life sciences as an industry seems to be at least twenty years behind the high tech industries ...

The question is, how does one measure demand and value in the life science industry? What is a more valuable drug? How do you assign a price to malaria?

This is not exactly the post for those of you afraid of flying. I’ve had this links and videos sitting in a text file on my computer since February when I found them. I was supposed to blog about them a long time ago, but I never could seem to find the time. Today, I made that time. It all started when I saw this photo: Then I started searching around for crazy places to ...

Love the idea of Google Apps, but feel like they already have more of your data than they should? Self-hosted, open-source app OpenGoo just released version 1.0, and it appears to be taking on not just Google Apps but services like Basecamp and Backpack, too. Live demo. Spreadsheets ("coming soon") are a notable omission, but the task lists and calendar integration make this pretty darn attractive to the GTD set.

The actual construction of our addition went pretty smoothly. We had the usual red tape to get through with permits from the city, but after all that was done we only hit a few kinks. I acted as General Contractor in order to save us some money. It was something that I had never done before but in the end it boiled down to two basic skills, nagging people, and basic problem solving. Luckily with ...

Existing solid-state drives are fast. The next generation of such drives could perform up to 100 times faster, though, thanks to a new flash-specific file system from SanDisk. The company unveiled its new ExtremeFFS file system on Wednesday. According to SanDisk, ExtremeFFS could improve random write speeds by up to 100 times by storing it in a more efficient way, rather than actually changing up the hardware. When data needs to be written, the drive ...

I have uploaded a great new PDF to the BtBWI site. It is a chart that lays out some of the common chemicals cited in ETS studies along with their levels and the thresholds that are to be met before being considered unsafe. Furthermore, the number of simultaneously burning cigarettes necessary to meet that threshold is calculated to show people just how asinine the various arguments are…

We've heard U.S. commanders ask over and over again for more troops in Afghanistan. But there are other, major military shortages in Afghanistan, too. Like today may be helicopters and spy planes. "For soldiers in Afghanistan, who often patrol at altitudes of 10,000 feet, helicopters are vital for troop movements, medical evacuation and avoiding roadside bombs," the Washington Post reports. A shortage of rotary-wing aircraft to transport U.S. and allied forces is "fundamentally one of ...
