It is with excitement that I announce that I'm writing a new book, Twitterville--How Business can Thrive in the new Global Neighborhoods. Charlene Li will be writing the Foreword and Chris Brogan will author a guest chapter on Twitter tools. My publisher is Portfolio, a respected Penguin Books, imprint. I start writing later today. Like Naked Conversations, Twitterville is primarily a business book. It is filled with examples of how people in all sizes and ...

A fellow social media enthusiast Bill Deys, whom I was lucky enough to meet at the PodCamp Michigan ‘08 afterglow, touched on an issue that has eaten away at me for a long time, and that is the (over)use of the term “expert” in the social media realm. He made a point that I’ve been preaching since I can remember — nobody can call themselves an “expert” in social media. SM is so new, and ...

The New York Times reports today that President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team “signaled to Eric H. Holder Jr., a senior official in the Justice Department in the Clinton administration, that he will be chosen as attorney general.” While the Obama transition team denied that Holder has been selected, many progressives see Holder as a strong rebuke of the Bush Justice Department. Glenn Greenwald — a consistent and vocal critic of the Bush Justice Department — ...

Introduction "Hey Andy? What happened to your Day One post?" Excellent question. I was going to post a Day One post - really I was - but I got side-tracked. I won't mention any names, but I will blame the major offenders by their Twitter handles: @BrentO, @sqlagentman, and @SqlBatman. These gentlemen forced me - through coercion and peer pressure (you teenagers take note) - into joining them Sunday evening at a cool little bar ...

I thought of this post the other day, but after reading Dan Schawbel’s post on “Learning How To Build Your Brand from Rock Bands,” I felt compelled to postpone more important work (see: school) and fledge this concept out. 1.) If you are a blogger you have to have a unique niche, perspective, etc. in the same way that a muscian needs a unique sound. There’s thousands of blogs out there about social media marketing. ...

(Cue telemarketer voice.) You’ve heard the news! You can get some massive traffic and buzz to your stories through social media. But unless you’re Chris Brogan, Guy Kawasaki or even Rick Sanchez, you don’t have a ready-made buzz machine. How can you get traffic? Social bookmarking sites, of course, like Digg, Mixx, StumbleUpon and Reddit. Here’s how you can get started: 1. Sign up for Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Mixx. Try using the same user ...

In my post “Using Social Media to Get Out of Your House”, I recommended some great social media tools and services that I use to get out of my house. However, one particular service I told you that I’d save for another post. Why? Because Brightkite has so much potential, that I’d only just begun to see when they released their Brightkite app for the iPhone. It’s phenomenal and well worth having it’s own post. ...

Image by micahb37 via Flickr Until I began to use Twitter and get more heavily involved in social media, I never heard the term “personal brand.” With more than 15 years in marketing (and more than 30 years in marketing myself), I certainly am aware of the concept of reputation management and branding. Recently, there have been two concurrent discussions occurring around SEO and personal branding. One, here on this blog (SEO is dead), where ...

I decided to do a video post today because, frankly, I'm too excited to type. This blog is my thought space, and my current thoughts needed to be chattered. The good Juju I'm experiencing I believe to have been borne of the heavy influence of Jason Calacanis, Chris Brogan, and Jason Goldberg. They're chutzpa and know-how have become an inseperable resource of inspiration for me. (Thanks, guys!) Once I've calmed down a bit and have gotten ...
