Filed under: WirelessSprint's XOHM WiMAX network is finally due out this month in the launch market of Baltimore, with Chicago and DC to follow, and the company is already working on the next phase of the rollout, which will bring the high-speed wireless service to Boston, Philadelphia, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Sprint says it's already started installing WiMAX equipment in those three cities and that it's a "month ahead of schedule," but given the delays getting ...

With the Sprint / Clearwire WiMax merger still pending approval, Clearwire has announced they have 12 months operating cash on hand. Public companies’ full disclosure requirements gives the anti competitive, predatory telcos a time line to delay approval of the merger and potentially kill Clearwire. Such ambulance chasing gamesmanship is not new for the telcos. They’ve used this tactic to crush competition repeatedly, using the very deep pockets only a monopoly can provide. Clearwire has ...

The all-out war between telephone companies and cable companies is now going to be fought on a whole new front: wireless. Last week, Cox confirmed that it was getting into the wireless business, joining cable industry peers. Patrick Esser, president at Cox, revealed wireless at the Progress and Freedom Foundation conference in Aspen, Colo.: “I won’t divulge too many secrets here, but we’ll focus on providing simple calling plans, integrating all our services into one ...

Ever since we put together our first Sidecut Report on WiMax and its comprehensive look at the impact of the New Clearwire deal on the U.S. market, we have been intrigued by the prospect of the 2.5 GHz spectrum holdings that Sprint and the old Clearwire brought to the table. So instead of just wondering about it, we spent some time asking questions and came up with a new product, something we are calling a ...

On the Internet, you can never be too fast or carry too much data, which is why Sprint is crowing about its plan to convert its core network to deliver data at 40 Gbps using the 40 Gigabit Ethernet technologies. The carrier will use Cisco and Ciena gear to deliver 40 Gig E Gbps over its existing fiber network worldwide. To help put the speeds in context, a 40 Gig E backbone will be able ...

Who would have guessed? Clearwire is the biggest wireless broadband provider (ranked according to number of subscribers). Telephony Online says: “Clearwire’s 443,000 subscribers give it almost one quarter of all individual broadband wireless connections in the first quarter and more than double the number of total mobile WiMAX subscribers.” Clearwire will be launching its WiMAX service in Baltimore in September. It will offer service in Chicago and Washington DC in the fourth quarter of 2008. ...

Filed under: WirelessAs WiMax-powered 4G networks remain the stuff of holding companies and litigation, a group of providers have gotten together to form an (evil?) alliance that they say will help speed up both development and deployment. In other words, they want Qualcomm on board, which holds the juiciest 4G patents. The Open Patent Alliance (OPA) includes Intel, the recently-formed Clearwire, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Samsung, and Sprint. Similar to the Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NextWave Wireless, Nokia Siemens ...

The deal to combine Sprint Nextel’s and Clearwire’s fledgling WiMax businesses that was rumored last March is finally expected to go through. Comcast and Intel are supposed to put in $1 billion each; Time Warner, $550 million; Google, $500 million; and regional cable provider Bright House Networks, $100 million. The new company, which will be valued at $12 $14.5 billion, will be run by Clearwire and take its name. As I said before, this is ...
