Here are two video clips on demolition projects in Ji’an city, Jilin province. The video was recorded on May 29, 2008, and gradually spread through the Chinese cyberspace. Thanks to Boxun for uploading them to YouTube. On June 2, 2008, the city government of Ji’an publicized a statement on this event, claiming the process is “legal.”

Leave it to the Japanese to come up with the best way to demo a building. No muss, no fuss. It’s just brilliant. And 20% faster than the old way, which is messy, indeed. From BBC News: A Beijing family are refusing to move from their city centre home, despite a court order threatening to throw them out. Family members say they are not being offered enough compensation for the home they bought 60 years ago. Their campaign is attracting large crowds, who gather at the tumble-down shack in the heart of historic Beijing. It could pose a problem for officials, who want to avoid embarrassing incidents ahead of ...

OK, so it’s not quite so dramatic as the old-fashioned controlled explosion method, but it’s infinitely more elegant and high-tech: check out this amazing time-lapse video of the Kajima Corporation’s new method of demolishing obsolete buildings in crowded Tokyo: According to Pink Tentacle: Unlike conventional demolition that begins at the top of the building, Kajima’s new method starts at the bottom. As each floor is demolished, the support columns are cut and replaced with giant ...

Kajima's floor-by-floor slow demolition is one of those rare things in life that leaves you truly speechless, mouth wide-open, and pinching yourself to be sure this is real while you mutter "what the frak." After all, seeing the video of a 20-floor building submerging into the asphalt as if it was liquid is something that belongs to a sci-fi movie. The stunning process—called daruma-otoshi—is not only almost surrealistic but it helps to reduce the environmental ...

Try to imagine if you can, getting all jazzed up in your “I am so going out on the town and am going to look amazing” outfit, only to find yourself donning a hard hat, goggles and white painters uniform while being handed a sledge hammer in order to smash walls, closets and bathrooms at one of the finest hotels in Paris. That’s exactly what several hundred VIP’s were invited to do at Le Royal ...

Remember the Robosaurus? Let me refresh your memory. The gigantic robotic dinosaur looks like a metal, fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus Rex, and might be just about as fierce. Capable of picking up cars, then crushing them with its razor-sharp jaws, I certainly wouldn’t want to run into one in a back alley. So it’s with much glee that I report that the Robosaurus is up for auction. That’s right, you can own the giant beast and put ...
