Charley Harper designed a large mosaic mural for the John Weld Peck Federal Building at 550 Main St. in downtown Cincinnati. To see it, you just have to go through security [who seem unhappy about people photographing it, but are probably used to it by now].

I love living downtown, I always have. With the exception of my year(ish)-long excursion to Seattle, I’ve had my roots planted in the downtown area for near four years. I’ve watched Main Street slowly die and, thankfully, other areas claw there way up. Right now I’ve got a lot of hope for downtown and I [...]

There's a new push to get Downtown's streetcar system going, writes the Downtown News' Anna Scott, noting the zippy car system could arrive in "two years" rather than 10 years or even 3-4 years (what we reported in May). City officials and leaders approved the formation of L.A. Streetcar, a non-profit organization modeled after Portland, Oregon's non-profit organization Portland Streetcar Inc.; it's expected that the new non-profit will not only handle the design and operational ...

The Glazer clan may have packed up Stanford’s and moved their drama to the hinterlands of KCK. The Power & Light District may be planning to bring a St. Louis comedy chain to Downtown. But Westport will not be denied its comedy. Improv troupe ComedyCity has relocated from Downtown’s Columbus Park neighborhood to a new space in the Westport Flea Market, Bar, and Grill. ComedyCity started out in the back of Torre’s Pizza, now the ...

Linda Lange has a great package of stories in this week's "Go" section that looks at a pair of "eclectic historic neighborhoods" in Nashville and Chattanooga. East Nashville is an artist- and family-friendly place where you might meet a guy like Herb Williams, who makes sculptures out of Crayola crayons and whose neighbors are a novelist and a member of the Gypsy Hombres band. Meanwhile, Chattanoga's St. Elmo neighborhood is a gateway to Lookout Mountain ...

Tip of the hat to Rick at NNASJ who pointed out that Silicon Valley Business Journal is reporting changes to Whole Foods Markets’ plans for San Jose. The chain has been planning a new store on the Alameda at Stockton Street, and already demolished the warehouse previously on the site. Now, the planned size of the store has been reduced from 44,000 to 34,000 square feet, and it’s not expected to open until 2010. Many ...

Hailing from Downtown, LA, War Tapes are an indie/post punk band who I was recently introduced to through their myspace. After downloading their single for free, I think everyone should hear this band. They are signed to indie label Sarathan Records, and produce an amazing sound - described as a mix between The Cure, Depeche Mode, and AFI - its a healthy mix and after hearing the soaring chorus, you will quickly find yourself humming ...

This weekend I saw the recently finished Belmont Station apartments on the old soccer field at 2nd Street and Beverly near Belmont High and wondered if the subway tunnel opening survived. Via Curbed LA I learn that it did. The tunnel mouth where street cars used to rattle between Hollywood and the Subway Terminal Building downtown has been cleaned up and a mural added. The area, once part of the Toluca Yard, is going to ...

As if you needed more coverage. As if you needed to hear another opinion. Here is my opinion on the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Since I believe in function first, form second, I'm going to review this structure from the inside out, focusing first on the seating bowl, which if it isn't successful, then the entire building isn't. Then the concourses and other spaces between. And finishing with the exterior, which most of Indianapolis has ...

The former Paul C. Stetson School northeast of Fall Creek Parkway and College Avenue could soon find new life as a 47-unit senior apartment complex. The Mapleton Fall Creek Community Development Corp. and Stetson Senior Apartments LP have filed plans to transform the 1924 building, which most recently served as offices and The Saint Christopher Center, an early childhood education program affiliated with the Christ Church Cathedral. Plans call for the old school’s gymnasium to ...

The historic art deco style Enquirer Building, built in 1926, has seen better days. What used to be home to Cincinnati’s daily newspaper until the 1980’s, is now a class “C” office building with an abysmal 16% occupancy rate. With nearly three decades of hard times, the “Grand Lady of Vine Street” is ready for her makeover. In May 2007, Middle Earth Developers (MED) purchased the building with plans to renovate and develop the historic ...
