Chris Buckley, in a fascinating essay “apologizes” to his departed father, and essentially states that John McCain in particular, and the GOP in general, have become ugly kooks, of the sort his father had meant to purge from the conservative movement. Chris — an author of books and articles in his own right, including the back page of National Review — cites a number of reasons for his abandoning McCain, for whom he once wrote ...

Yesterday, a few readers protested because I said that the current candidates used socialist rhetoric. In the comments, I even pointed to socialist actions. That view was derided as being ignorant of the meaning of socialism. Given what Van Helsing reports today, my post seems even more restrained than it first appeared: The DSA and its New Party were socialist in the same sense as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics — i.e., they were ...

Robert Gibbs, Senator Obama's communication director and senior spokesman called out Sean Hannity for using the likes of Andy Martin as a source that appeared on his own show to attack Obama with. Good for him and that's how it's done. (rough transcript) Gibbs: Let me ask you a question. Are you anti-Semitic? Hannity: Not at all. Gibbs: On your show on Sunday, the show that's named after you, right? The center piece of that ...

Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) John McCain tried to once again attack Obama over his assertion that if he found OBL he would take him out. Somehow in McCain's mind, Obama is giving out classified secrets to the enemy by announcing that to the world. It was interesting that Obama won the foreign policy of the debate pretty easily last night. Charles Krauthammer was shocked over that development on FOX in the ...

David Kernell, the 20-year-old Tennessee student who has been under suspicion for allegedly obtaining unauthorized access into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's private Yahoo e-mail account, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Tennessee. According to a Justice Department spokeswoman, the grand jury returned the sealed indictment Tuesday afternoon, and Kernell turned himself into the FBI this morning, after which the indictment was unsealed. Kernell is being arraigned in Tennessee today. (Update: a trial ...

Need more evidence that Democrats are more grassroots tech savvy than their elephantine counterparts? At a Sarah Palin rally in LA on Saturday, the California Democratic party rented a digital billboard across the street which displayed questions for the veep candiate sent by text message. Granted, even if Palin did read them, she wouldn't be able to recall which ones she read specifically. But still, quite awesome—I hope both parties get creative with tech like ...

The General Election Debates: They Haven't Changed Much. Image courtesy Bettman/Corbis Both the campaigns of John McCain and Barack Obama are calling on the Commission on Presidential Debates to use internet technology to open up the general election debate formats to better reflect the questions on the minds of the electorate. The requests are themselves a response to a bipartisan group calling themselves the Open Debate Coalition, which sent a letter to the two presidential ...

Hulu is to enter the live streaming space for the first time, offering the remaining two Presidential debates live as part of its new Hulu Election ‘08 portal. The new portal features clips and full replays of major political stories (such as previous debates) and topical clips, such as last weekends Saturday Night Live send up of the Vice Presidential debate. It sounds like a good service, and I would have tested it before writing ...

The terms "Keating Five," "Keating Economics," "Charles Keating," and "McCain Keating," hovered among several of the top search terms on Google Monday, as Barack Obama's campaign launched a new 13-minute online video that portrays McCain as someone who hasn't learned from his past bad judgments during critical financial crises. The term "Keating Five" was the seventh-most searched for term on Google Monday afternoon, right after searches for voter registration information in Texas and Florida, and ...

[Note: For some reason I must have initially shut off comments without at all all meaning to -- they are now back on.] I do not use illicit drugs, even tho to the core of my being I do not believe they should be criminalized. A large part of my reason for holding that view is that modern-day drug dealers are the new, violent Al Capones, with booze being replaced by pot, coke & etc. ...

Download | Play Download | Play I often wonder what it's like to live in the simplistic black-and-white world of your typical Republican bobblehead. Are their brains truly this unable to process nuance? Take, for example, Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) who is only too happy to categorize (with host Bob Schieffer's enabling, bless his Republican-loving little heart) Barack Obama as unpatriotic. Why? Because at his speech in Germany, he acknowledged that there have been errors ...

These smears have been floating around in email chain letters, but even still, this really shows just how low and how desperate the McCain campaign is. Not Larry Sabato: The LA Times scoops the Virginia media with this column from the McCain campaign's official Buchanan County representative. You need to read this column to believe it. In "humor" he accuses Obama of wanting to paint the White House black, supporting reparations, changing the national anthem ...

With their matching bang/bun hairdos, square frames, and tendency to talk up their strengths while displaying their weaknesses, it's easy to see why people are comparing Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin with the best substitute Spanish teacher in Arlen, Texas, Mrs. Peggy Hill. But appearances aside, how similar are these two women? Let's break it down, issue by issue, using real quotes from both Palin and Peggy: Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine? Sarah ...

The Obama campaign has already released an ad using footage from last night’s VP debate and they’ve scored another direct hit. The ad targets Sarah Palin from last night’s debate as she proudly announced John McCain’s disastrous health care plan that allows a $5000 tax credit for Americans to purchase health care — and then strikes right back with Joe Biden’s brilliant response, reminding people that in order to offset the credit McCain’s plan would ...

There were no game changers in last night’s Vice Presidential debate, but the American people were treated to more rambling, incoherent non-answers from Republican Sarah Palin. Among the head scratching moments was this rant about nuclear weapons. Palin starts off on one of her “US Americans — such as” answers about how America uses nukuler weapons safely, yadda, yadda, yadda. Here’s the money line: ” Uh, nukuler weaponry, of course, would be the be-all, end-all ...
