Image via Wikipedia Image via Wikipedia Posted in Friday Funny Many of you are up to your neck in Christmas shopping. One week from today is Black Friday, a day of shopping madness. As you are out and about in stores, use this handy guide to help you understand what retail-sales clerks really mean. 1. “Can I help you find a size?” (Don’t touch that, I just spent an hour folding it and I don’t ...

This past week, I heard one of the finest talks to be given at a student retreat. Ever.Tom, the speaker, mentioned that his life had followed a plan as had been laid out by his parents and the expected norms of society. Then, out of the blue, something happened which provided the ultimate detour for his life. For the first time ever, he asked himself, "what if I'm not a big deal?" Tom went on ...

My good friend Matt Barnes, of Capitol Ministries Indiana, led prayer in the Indiana House of Representatives on Organization Day. To my knowledge, this is the first time a pastor has been allowed to give an uncensored prayer since the ACLU of IN sued then House Speaker Brian Bosma, and Judge David Hamilton ruled against prayer in Jesus name. In the Senate on Organization Day, Sen. Pat Miller gave the invocation, "in Jesus Christ's name." ...

Earlier this year Paul Krugman noted that the U.S, economy is suffering from “a crisis of faith”, implying that we had lost trust in the institutions of capitalism. The word “credit” comes from the Latin root–Credo–”I believe.” When we don’t believe our President or Hank Paulson or the CEO of Citibank, the whole edifice of contemporary American economics begins to crumple. Much of this edifice has been built on the theories of Milton Friedman and ...

Tonight in our small group we talked about the ways that we’re hoping to grow in our faith during this season. Although we’re all at different places in our faith walk, we’re all seeking something, responding to something and hoping for something. We’re longing for something more and better. This idea fits well into the season of the church calendar - Advent. In the Orthodox and Celtic churches, Advent is a 40-day preparation period before ...

OK, so this is just cool. Like, give-you-goosebumps cool. Christianity Today has posted an image of biblical cross references:When Christoph Römhild, a Lutheran pastor in Hamburg, Germany, sent Carnegie Mellon Ph.D. student Chris Harrison a list of 63,779 cross-references between the Bible's 1,189 chapters, the two became enthralled with elegantly showing the interconnected nature of Scripture. Each bar along the horizontal axis represents a chapter, with the length determined by the number of verses. (Books ...

I walked into her room. She recognized me and started to cry. I pulled up a chair and took her hand. “I want to serve.” That’s what she said. She’s dying. Colon cancer. Four years. A couple remissions. Fran and Phil Mortensen have lived in Fort Wayne for a long time. They have spent forty years focusing on people with needs. To use Phil’s words, he stirred up the riot and Fran got it organized. ...

Have you ever felt like your life is a series of unfortunate events? I hear this phrase all too much in my friends lives. The other day a close friend told me her bank account has gone negative for 3 months in a row and there is nothing she can do about it. I honestly felt bad a moment of empathy for her but immediately realized that she chose to make the money she made. ...
