Filed under: NewsThe Guardian has listed a bunch of environmental regulations George W. Bush wants to either weaken or totally reverse in the two months he has left in the Oval Office.Bush's to-do list of dismantling eco-safeguards include eroding current protection for parks, rivers and wildlife and reducing rules that get big factory farms to clean up their planet-damaging waste. He's looking to get these last-minute, not-so-green rules set in place before Obama is sworn ...

Jenn Pentland While we've all been eating our entire lives, recently there has been a huge increase in awareness of where our food comes from, how it's produced, and how that affects our bodies and our environment. Along with this awareness has come a cornucopia of books focusing on food. There are books about what to eat, how to eat, where to eat, why to eat, and, I'm sure, when to eat. In an effort ...

Photo via belgianchocolate Are they going to have to make a Madagascar 3 movie where a lion, zebra, giraffe and hippo work to rescue some crazy lepilemurs (and pygmy tarsiers) not from foosas, but from human destruction? South Korea’s Daewoo Logistics has signed a 99-year lease entitling them to half of all Madagascar’s arable land. And, they will pay nothing to farm corn and palm oil there. The goal is to boost Seo...

As I walk the side walks of the suburban neighborhoods that I work in I have begun to digest everything that is going on around me. However, the most interesting site right now is the masses of new mothers walking around. I understand they want to go out and enjoy the day and I applaued that goal. They walk around in their expensive athletic gear as if they are going to do a hardcore workout. ...

Somali pirates have nabbed their biggest prize yet -- a Saudi-owned supertanker, about as big as an aircraft carrier.* The ocean-going hijackers managed to pull off this latest assault, on the Sirius Star, despite a swarm of international warships now working to ward off such strikes. "Our presence in the region is helping deter and disrupt criminal attacks off the Somali coast, but the situation with the Sirius Star clearly indicates the pirates’ ability to ...

The "Breath Bra" was created as a simple excersize using a LilyPad Arduino to record its wearer's breath over the course of a day or week and transmit the data over a Bluetooth connection to their cellphone (in this case a Nokia N95). Funnypolynomial framed up the Game of Life kit, nice! via Ladyada. I've been fascinated by Life since I first read of it in Scientific American, many years ago (October 1970!). The Maker Shed store had a couple of sales so I bought a total of 6 Game of Life boards. I assembled them as a 2x3 panel and used cables to join the edges. I mounted them in a simple frame. I'm moving back to ...

The Journal Star is reporting that Cody Glenn has been suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. The senior from Rusk, Texas was widely viewed as one of the leaders on defense. Glenn racked up 26 solo tackles and 25 assisted tackles this season. His departure will certainly leave a gap in a position where the Huskers already lack depth. Sophomore Blake Lawrence is listed behind Glenn on the depth chart and will ...

[Design Boom]

Image source: Capital Growth Monday we reported on a project in San Francisco to increase backyard gardens and locally produced food. Today we have yet another local gardening project to report on, as reported in The Guardian, this time in London. The Capital Growth project encourages area residents to plant gardens on their empty, flat roofs, well and frankly just about any available space in London, to increase the amount of locally grown food. ...
