I ran an interesting workshop at Mobile World Congress for people interested in augmented reality. The topic, should I build a plug-in for another application was one of the groups discussion topics. Some of the audience members were in favour of building plug-ins and I can see the attraction. Products like Layar and Wikitude provide you with the application leaving you only to worry about your POIs. If you are not a marketing expert then ...

Look out, OnLive -- you've got company. InstantAction is having their coming out party at GDC, and we stopped by for a lengthy chat about the technology, its future and the hopes / dreams of the company. Put simply (or as simply as possible), IA has developed a browser-based plug-in that allows full games to be played on any web browser so long as said browser is on a machine capable of handling the game. ...

Here's the idea. The government recommends a diet for healthy living (right pyramid), but at the same time there are billions of dollars of lopsided subsidies (left pyramid) whose distribution doesn't look anything like the former. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) used the above 3-d pyramids to present this information. Interesting point. Funky presentation. Discuss (remakes highly recommended). Wednesday’s school board meeting was packed by 5:30 pm and though the largest crowds had left by 9:30 pm, the board did not adjourn to closed session until shortly before midnight. In addition to the several hot issues on the agenda, each of which pulled in a crowd, representatives from four Oakland public schools that have just been listed on the state’s lowest-performing schools list came to the meeting to state their disagreement with the ...

There are no shortage of location-based services launching this week at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Many of them allow you to “check-in” places to let others know you are there. So how do you differentiate between then and decide which to use? Well, here’s one good way. Tweetie 2, our favorite iPhone twitter client just got quite an update. It now boasts Foursquare integration, which lets you check out venues your friends tweet about right from the app and it will also run just fine on your upcoming iPad. The most interesting addition however, is most probably Instapaper Mobilizer. Indeed, while checking tweets is quick and convenient, whenever you follow a link, you’re stuck waiting for a bulky web view to load. ...

I own a copy of this poster, framed, and signed by Kirs Kristofferson, Ernest Borgnine, and C.W. McCall. I am very proud of this. On my bookshelf, there’s an old VHS tape with a faded, hand-written label.
