British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, the top diplomat of one of our closest allies, derided John McCain's bellicose rhetoric, calling his excessively provocative proposal to kick Russia out of the G8 "knee-jerk":In a tough speech delivered in Kiev, Ukraine, Miliband said Russia will face consequences for its actions in Georgia. But he added: "In all international institutions, we need to review our relations with Russia. I do not apologize for rejecting knee-jerk calls for Russia ...

WITH Michelle Obama playing the role of all-American mum and Hillary Clinton talking unity, the lingering tensions in Georgia have receded somewhat from the headlines (half of Washington, after all, is in Denver). But there is a lot going on in the Caucasian republic for America’s policymakers to worry about. The latest news is that Russia declared the two breakaway provinces at the heart of the conflict between itself and Georgia to be independent, presumably ...

The U.S. wants a relatively loose agreement that allows us to keep troops in Iraq. But the prime minister is under intense political pressure to take a hard line against the Americans, even as his government engages in the back-and-forth of negotiations. Graffiti can be seen on the walls in Shiite districts of Baghdad saying, “Iraq for sale: See Maliki.” To further prove his independance, Malaki is getting ready to sign a big oil deal ...

The Glasgow Herald’s veteran political correspondent Iain McWhirter wonders wtf is wrong with America, that John McCain is actually level with Obama in the polls. A lot of Europeans are wondering the same thing. It seems incredible, but as the Democrats gather in Denver to anoint Barack Obama, America could be on course to re-elect a Republican as their President. Not just any Republican either, but a belligerent 71-year-old who can’t remember how many houses ...

That’s right. Nobody there. Let’s hope this ist true… BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Prime Nuri al-Maliki said on Monday that an agreement had been reached in negotiations on a security pact with the United States to end any foreign military presence in Iraq by the end of 2011. “There is an agreement actually reached, reached between the two parties on a fixed date which is the end of 2011 to end any foreign ...

Just not in a good way. Senator Joe Biden may be one of the only U.S. politicians that can get Iraq’s feuding Sunni, Shi’ite and Kurdish politicians to agree. But not in a good way. Biden was added to the ticket to add some kind of foreign policy experience to the Obama campaign. While Biden has more experience than the ridiculously under qualified Obama, it appears the Biden influence will add even more chaos to ...

In his now-famous 2002 speech, then state-senator Barack Obama said, “I’m not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.” And that would certainly represent an improvement over what we’ve got now. Curious, then, that Obama’s picked a running mate who seems to have no such objection. Today’s Washington Post details Biden’s role in enabling our Iraq adventure. It’s hardly a “Profiles in Courage” moment, and it also points up the gutless and constitutionally ...

Compare these words from William Z. Foster, general secretary of the Communist Party USA, as quoted in Ronald Radosh’s Prophets on the Right: “Socialist countries will not make war against each other,” Foster predicted confidently, “but will live together harmoniously.” Only a fascist world would be one beset with imperial war; “a socialist world will be a world permanently at peace.” with this familiar neocon line from Joshua Muravchik’s Exporting Democracy: Fulfilling America’s Destiny: …the ...

Had to take a break from my vacation to register my disappointment in Obama’s selection of Biden. I understand the rationale–Obama wants an attack dog to go after McCain while he appears to be above the fray. Biden also adds some foreign policy and Beltway heft to the ticket. The Beltway CW says this pick was safe, but not particularly bold. I think that’s about right. But from a policy perspective, it’s a disaster. Biden ...

Uh, oh … the U.S. ambassador to Russia actually believes the Kremlin had a reason to respond to Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia. Reports the Globe and Mail: The U.S. ambassador to Moscow, in a rare U.S. comment endorsing Russia’s initial moves in Georgia, described the Kremlin’s first military response as legitimate after Russian troops came under attack. U.S officials, including President George W. Bush, have strongly criticized Moscow’s subsequent action but have not focused ...

The rationale of the Surge in American forces in Iraq, according to George Bush and John McCain, was to provide the security conditions to allow Iraqi political reconciliation. It now appears the Maliki government has betrayed both General Petraeus and the Sunni Awakening Councils, and has no interest in sectarian peace. The Shiite-dominated government in Iraq is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols, the groups of former insurgents who joined the American payroll ...

Via Richard Spencer, some clear thinking from Thomas Sowell in the midst of much saber-rattling over at the National Review: Extending NATO right up to the borders of Russia has been one of those feel-good actions, much like our feel-good moralizing to other countries. Are we really prepared to go to war with Russia if they send troops into Latvia, a NATO member next door to them and thousands of miles away from us? Some ...

By Patricia H. Since then, the statement has been refined and the number of signatories has more than doubled. ...

You won’t often find me quoting the Libertarian Cato Institute line of reasoning, but on the Georgia-Russia conflict I think they are right on the money. One suspects that the goal of the U.S. venture is not purely humanitarian. The humanitarian justification is likely - at least in part - a cover for an attempt to establish a bridgehead of U.S. military and political influence in Georgia to thwart the advance of Russian power. If ...

It’s hard not to conclude that the crazy warmonger just really wants war for war’s sake. After all, he expresses concern for the Georgians. Fair enough. But how about the South Ossetians, who were attacked by the Georgians. Sen. McCain apparently can’t be bothered, since he is too busy blaming the Russians. But the South Ossetians know who to blame: the Georgians. Reports the BBC: The Bush administration appears to be trying to turn a ...

John McCain won’t rule out war with Russia over Georgia. If he really thinks that is justifiable, he is truly a madman. For what other minor stakes is he prepared to risk a nuclear confrontation? He should tell us before he is elected! Reports the Los Angeles Times: McCain for the first time declined to rule out a military intervention, if diplomatic pressure fails. “I really hesitate to talk about a military option at this ...
