What high-profile policy change has the support of 75 percent of the American public, and could be implemented by changing a very few simple statutes at essentially no cost to the American taxpayer? That would be a repeal of Public Law 103-160, the 1993 measure more commonly known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", which prohibits openly gay persons from serving in the United States military.Public sentiment on DADT has shifted dramatically since 1993. A May, 1993 ...

A few days ago, I wrote about how far-right christianists are trying to drive a wedge between the GLBT and African-American communities. It’s part of their script, along with saying that GLBT civil rights aren’t “real” civil rights, not like African-American civil rights. Almost without exception, the people pushing this line are white. One example is Mike Huckabee.Appearing on ABC (USA)’s The View, he praised the significance of the symbolism of the election of Barack Obama ...

Barack Obama will carry with him into the White House some of the highest expectations of any president, so much so that commentators have started warning us to relax and not expect everything to be solved at once. They’re doing this because they know that the higher the expectations, the more likely disappointment becomes. Many GLBT Americans are saying that Obama must act quickly on his promises. Some have argued for yet another March on Washington, ...

While I'm loathe to take anything written on the pages of the Washington Times at face value, if their story about Obama waiting until 2010 to push for a repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell is true, then it is a very bad decision.By waiting, it sends the message that this is just a neat little move towards social progress, nice, but not that important. By acting soon, Obama can legitimately say that this is ...

Here is an impression of Jesus that you can do at parties that is sure to amuse: Pour water on floor, then walk on it. Wait five minutes and wait to see who follows you to the bar. Proposition 8, which passed with 52 percent of the vote, inserts language into the constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman. Where does that leave a man that wants to insert himself in another man? ...

I found an anti-marriage-equality piece (via Andrew Sullivan) that was very interesting to me because of how it reflected its values. I saw a striking example of what Jonathan Haight has found about differences in morality between liberals and conservatives. Haight found that conservatives are more likely to value “moral purity”, which basically says “if it feels icky to me, then it must be morally wrong”. In his essay, Rod Dreher quotes University of Virginia ...

A few weeks ago I was getting dozens of emails about President-elect Barack Obama's Change.gov website and its lack of any mention of the words 'gay' or 'lesbian'. That has now changed, and the site, which echoes Obama's campaign positions, features a civil rights agenda for LGBT Americans more comprehensive than anything we've seen from an incoming president. Read the text of that agenda, AFTER THE JUMP...Support for the LGBT Community "While we have come ...

If there's an overriding theme to Taking on the System, my latest book, it's that we no longer have to sit around and wait for the gatekeepers to tell us what to do. We can engage in the world around us at our own discretion, focusing on the things we want to focus on, and no one can keep us out. The era of the gatekeeper is over (or at least dying), since their permission ...

[Prop 8 Fallout] Several e-mails and photocopies are floating through Salt Lake City calling out companies, trusts and business owners who contributed heavily to the anti-same-sex marriage California measure, and urging people not to patronize their businesses. After doing some research, I found the following contributors to the Prop 8 campaign. The information is public and you can find all donors, pro and con, here. The biggest Utah spenders in support of Prop 8, according ...

Between the support of Proposition 8 by the Latter Day Saints and the comments coming out of the Roman Catholic church on abortion, like the story of SC priest, some are calling for stripping these two groups of their 501(c)3 tax exempt status for getting involved in politics. Most of the arguments, however, misunderstand the tax law in some very basic ways. A post by Be_Devine at Calitics, speaking about the Prop 8 stuff, noted ...
