BEIJING - Chinese doctors released the country’s first diagnostic definition of Internet addiction over the weekend, amid efforts to address an increasing number of psychological problems that reportedly result from Internet overuse. Tao Ran, a medical expert at Beijing’s Military General Hospital, where the definition was developed, said it was also the first time for China to officially designate hospital psychiatric units to treat such cases. Symptoms of addiction included yearning to get back online, ...

With nothing but $25 and a backpack, Adam Shepard set out to prove whether the American Dream still exists. He headed for a city he didn’t know — Charleston, South Carolina — with the goal of having $2,500, a car and a place to live by the end of the year. Shepard chronicled his experiment in Scratch Beginnings. The book holds a few gems for average people working on their own lives — and you ...

An interesting book for sure, and an interesting writeup. One thing not mentioned is the guy had his own inate abilities, and prior education, wherever he went. Something not as many people are blessed with who are down in the dumps.

This Halloween I eschewed my usual political/news costume ideas in favor of internet meme costume ideas. And lo, the Rickroll costume concept was born. What if the front of me could look normal, and then when someone started talking to me, I could flip around and be Rick Astley? MS may have claimed that the New Xbox Experience will be reversible however it seems otherwise. A developer who has got his hands on the new XDK has informed us that there is no way to revert back to the old blades currently. So once you join in the fun, there will not be anyway to go back....

When it comes to low achievement in mathematics, one group of researchers believes we’re doing it to ourselves. Or rather their new study indicates that our culture’s attitude towards “nerd” subjects could be a primary cause. I haven’t read the full study but I’m sure it contains a whole lot of data and plenty of statistics. And that stuff is just going to confuse most Americans. So, let this summary from one young woman who ...

I LOVE the "Blog" of "Unnecessary" Quotation Marks. They've got photos of signage, menus, and what have you that display egregious over-quota quotation markage. The usage of unnecessary quotation marks is a plague much like the Comic Sans epidemic and it simply must be stopped. Why you would add quotation marks in these situations, I do not know. I do know that I enjoy laughing at those who make this error and I am not ...
