Sao Paulo is creating a registry of street art to be preserved. The city accidentally painted over a number of beloved murals, even when the art was officially sanctioned. (Previously.)

“In the environmental movement, every time you lose a battle it’s for good, but our victories always seem to be temporary and we keep fighting them over and over again.” David Suzuki. Welcome to the world of reverse graffiti, where the artist’s weapons are cleaning materials and where the enemy is the elements: wind, rain, pollution and decay. It’s an art form that removes dust or dirt rather than adding paint. Some find it intriguing, ...

Brian Auer | 03/08/2008 | Venice Beach, CA | 105mm * f/2.8 * 1/1000s * ISO200 [See it at Flickr] I’ve been so tied up with film lately, so I wanted to take a look back at a digital photo that had quite a bit of post-processing done to it. This photo was taken at the graffiti walls in Venice Beach, California. I’ve always been attracted to graffiti as an art form, and being able ...

Nasty Neck as Zorro with his motley crew and (below) their clown counterparts… Saturday nite in Hollywood was like Halloween in August when the street art goblin known as NECK FACE took over LA’s NEW IMAGE ART gallery with his new “Cannibal Carnival” art show. A short and bittersweet exhibition of 6 large new paintings (Neck’s best yet) all retailing for a healthy $6,500 a pop, augmented by garish black & red wall treatment, a ...

George W. Bush is arguably the most controversial person in the world. Whether you love him or hate him, he is clearly one of the most influential figures in modern history (we’ll leave the politics of that influence up to you). And nowhere has his influence been displayed more than in the world of art. From the streets of Sydney to the museums of New York, President Bush has inspired an awakening in many artists. ...

Last April I wrote a post about The Graffiti Project, taking Brazilian artists and allowing them to go to town on a Kelburn Castle, a 600 year old castle in Scotland that needed some restoration. Well a reader of the site Louise Wilson definitely remembered the post because she happened to live 5 minutes away from the castle. So she was awesome enough to take some photos of the castle and send them to me, ...

If you have even the slightest interest in street art, graffiti or self expression, do yourself a favor and rent (or buy) Bomb It. Directed by filmmaker John Reiss, the documentary traces the graffiti movement from Cornbread’s first tag in 1967, to the current co-opting of street art style in mainstream advertising and media. Rather than attempt to write a review, watch the trailer and read what others have to say about this brilliant film: ...

This is clearly one of those art-imitating-art type situations going on here. This is also another piece of evidence that hoodlums and criminals aren’t the ones defacing public property, it is movie geeks and very creative artists. I have always been drawn by graffiti, I’m one of those people who see it as art. So why not take an art form and transplant it into another form of iconography? I really love the bathroom stall ...
