I was thinking about the job market today and wanted to check some stats; so I headed over to Indeed and did a few runs on salary information. The first chart shows the average salary of an early stage company compared to “Fortune” companies. Not what you’d expect, is it? The next chart I have is salary information from select west coast venture capital institutions. The jobs within the data pool here are from their ...

In my last post I mentioned the possibility of learning more about the structure(s) and behaviour(s) within the dpreview forums through the process of developing a model to describe it. Well, developing models is hard-going, so I deciding to tackle it from a more interesting angle and spent some time attempting to represent forum activity graphically. Digging a hole for one's selfHow and where to start? Well, there are myriad metaphors for the concept of ...

The MPAA ratings system tomorrow celebrates its 40th birthday — four full decades of tormenting filmmakers, distributors and, ultimately, audiences with an inconsistent moral code symbolized by those infamous G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 ratings. In an interview published Thursday in Time, MPAA chief Dan Glickman and ratings board chair Joan Graves reflected warmly on the system's evolution over the years; and while we agree that Hollywood's self-governance is preferable to the zealotry of ...

Forward thinking media companies are already shifting their obsession away from eyeball delivery and toward identifying their clients’ best customers, understanding their needs, and building customized marketing relationships with them. In the digital age, the tools will be available to place more focus on return-on-marketing investment; decision-making based on cost efficiency and mass reach alone will no longer be acceptable.

I was deciding this morning whether or not to go to your Professional Developer Conference. It’s being hyped up as one of the most important in Microsoft’s recent history. I’ve decided not to go for a variety of reasons. The economy. The numbers of bloggers and journalists who’ll be there (so many the stories will get out). My family, which has seen me on the road too much this year. The fact that I rarely ...

Seth Godin, well-known marketing guru, took a strong and misguided stand against bar charts1 in a recent blog post entitled “The three laws of great graphs” Godin suggests that bar charts (and presumably other chart types like scatterplots, bubble charts, bullet charts, treemaps, etc.) give too much latitude for data confusion and ambiguity when used in presentations. In Godin’s view, a chart should make a single, clear point and leave no room for alternative conclusions. ...
