1. I spotted hardback copies of one of my favorite foodie books, The Apprentice by Jacques Pepin, on the discount racks of the Creve Coeur Borders. I can’t possibly recommend it enough. It’s incredibly interesting as a whole but, with Pepin’s insane skill, the really interesting bits are his years at Howard Johnson’s. It’s hard to imagine a time when people were attempting to make chain food that actually stood up to some level of ...

Gone are the days of pushing "premium" food offerings, says the Wall Street Journal— big food manufacturers like Kraft and Campbell are going to be pushing "cheap" foods like tomato soup and cheese singles — foods which are thought of as "easy on the wallet" but are still hugely profitable for the manufacturers. From the WSJ: But lower-priced "value" products can also have wide margins because they're cheaper to make. "Food companies will be careful ...

Next time you feel up your fruit at Berkeley Bowl, think twice before going to second base with your cherry tomato. Raphael Breines was nabbed in the Berkeley Bowl parking lot — a.k.a. “Berkeley Brawl” for its infamous tales of Bowl-shopper brutes and automobile savagery — by premise security. He was apparently caught taste-testing in the apricot section on Berkeley Bowl security cameras. The man couldn’t doggone choose between two breeds of apricots, and now ...

The New York Times reports that several supermarket and retail chains, including Safeway, Walmart, and Whole Foods, are beginning to experiment with much smaller store sizes that emphasize things like cafes, prepared meals, and produce. The idea is to emphasize speed over choice, and was apparently triggered by UK competitor Tesco, which has launched over 70 small-format supermarkets in Nevada, Arizona, and Southern California over the past year. Of course, the stores also require less ...

tap tap tap exists in somewhat of a virtual state… we have no central office and everyone involved is in a different part of the world. So how do we work efficiently on our projects? Many things like coding and marketing can be done in a vacuum. The person responsible for his or her task can simply work on it and report back to the team when appropriate. There’s really no need for Sophia to ...

Wegman's is recalling all in-store made bagels and bialys (flattened bagels) sold between August 24th and September 9th "because the bagels may contain pieces of a metal spring from a mixer that entered the dough." If you have some, return them to your store's customer service desk for a refund. Wegmans says this doesn't affect their frozen bagels. The recall was announced after an unspecified customer complaint, which we imagine went something like, "Hey, there ...

Health weblog SmarterFitter knows how difficult it can be to buy healthy food once you hit the supermarket, so they've created a couple of grocery list templates designed to help you stick to the good stuff. The list breaks down items into helpful shopping categories, leaving a little room in each for your own additions. You're probably already aware of the time you can save by using a grocery list template in the first place, ...

As you can see by the look on my face and I’ve marked it out for you, that photo is representative of how I came off towards the checkout lady at the grocery store today. Why? By Andrea DicksonI understand the need for clean, sterile packaging of food. We live in an era (soon to be ending, mind you, if you believe the peak oil people) in which food travels great distances before it arrives in the massive grocery stores where we purchase it. It is true that frozen peas need to be placed in some kind of container for shipping, and a plastic bag or a thin carboard box are ...

In the App Store, one of the problems developers are facing is getting more attention for their apps. We’ve run into this and even though we’ve had some good results the past week or so through various efforts, we’re continuing to push things as hard as we can. A few weeks ago infamous Mac developer, Austin Sarner was brainstorming with me about how we could get more exposure for our apps, especially since he just ...

What's that tasty new flavor in your Hot Pocket? Maybe it's plastic! Nestlé is recalling over 200,000 pounds of Hot Pockets after some pieces of what they suspect is a testing device turned up in the product. The recall is for 54-ounce, 12-pack cartons of Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza with the following printed on the sides of each carton: “8157544614D,” “EST 7721A” and “BEST BEFORE JAN2010.” If you have some of the recalled product, spit ...

Does anyone remember Bunnicula? We think there's a similar beast in the Banquet pot pie plant, only instead of sucking vegetables dry he's draining the pies before they ship. That's the only thing that can explain how the real pot pie this Consumerist reader cooked looks nothing like the bountiful pot pie harvest shown on the box. Oh wait: it could also be that Banquet is a cheap-assed company that can't be bothered to sell ...
